RPGs offer some of the most memorable moments in gaming history. RPGs are filled with epic stories, impossible adventures, grinding gameplay, and character developments like no other. These are the factors that have come to define the genre. RPGs are synonymous with PC gaming because that’s where it all started. It’s an unspoken rule that the definitive RPG experience is on PC. So, grab your change jar and start your wish lists, here are the top 10 upcoming RPGs.
10. Cyberpunk 2077
Welcome to Night City, CA. Where dystopia has never looked so good.
CD Projekt Red’s CyberPunk 2077 comes from the same developers that were behind The Witcher series. Running on the REDEngine4, this title looks extremely promising in gameplay, graphics, storytelling, and open world exploration. CyberPunk also has more people working it than they had on their previous title Witcher III: The Wild Hunt, creating an entirely new development team dedicated only to this game. That’s pretty impressive. If the past is any indication of the future, then it’s safe to say this RPG is one to look for.
9. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord
I love the smell of blood and hay in the morning. It smells like victory.
TaleWorlds Entertainment first announced this game back in 2012 as a prequel to 2010’s Mount & Blade: Warband. This action RPG/RTS hybrid promises a lot of great features from detailed avatar customization, tons of weapons, both 3rd and 1st person action, large and diverse battlefields, and “Captain Mode” to give orders to your troops in real time. Think Shogun 2 meets Game of Thrones. Oh, and you can impale people in a drive-by on your horse. What’s not to like?
8. Anthem
I can see my house from here and… it’s on fire.
Bioware’s new IP looks really promising. It’s a loot-based MMO RPG 3rd Person Shooter similar to Destiny, The Division, and Battlefront. You play within arena maps as different classes of soldiers called Javelins. Say what you want about EA but they know how to make online shooting and take it next level. There is some speculation that Anthem will have elemental weapons and shields similar to Destiny and Mass Effect in gameplay which could really add to the fun factor. Plus, you can fly. Top it all off with amazing graphics and this game could replace Crysis as the modern PC benchmark. But does it play Anthem bro??? On Ultra bro??? Didn’t think so bro.
7. Wasteland 3
The hardest Russian album cover of all time.
Wasteland 3 is an upcoming RPG by in Xile Entertainment that offers role-playing action with turn-based squad combat. Similar to Halo Wars and Star Wars: Empire at War. The setting takes place in a post-apocalyptic Colorado where you take control of the last surviving member of Team November. Just like Wasteland 2, this game was crowdfunded but through Fig service this time and not Kickstarter. This game is brought to you by the same people that made Torment: Tides of Numenera which set the record for the highest-funded video game on all of Kickstarter. Wasteland 3 is scheduled to launch in 2019.
6. Valkyria Chronicles 4
Squad goals. Tank mandatory.
Valkyria Chronicles first won us over on the PlayStation 3 back in 2009. It’s an awesome hybrid action strategy RPG developed by Sega that offers a unique blend of real-time action and turn-based warfare that the series is now famous for today. After a bit of a disappointment with last year’s Valkyria Revolution, Chronicles 4 looks like a return to form and the closest to the original yet. If you have not yet played the original Valkyria Chronicles, get it on Steam cheap now to tie you over until 4 is released.
5. The Banner Saga 3
Sorry about your boat but we needed the wood.
The third and final installment of the Banner Saga Trilogy. This unique tactical RPG pays homage to the early days of gameplay found in Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. But finds its own identity within its art style and Viking aesthetic to keep it fresh as the fallen snow. This game was developed by Stoic which is a studio of former BioWare employees who moved out and started a new band. This is another game on our list that was crowdfunded and has a strong legion of fans who are ready to pillage and plunder.
4. Greedfall
Coolest Senior picture ever.
Greedfall is an up and coming title developed by Spiders. You play as a human caught up on an island paradise with other races of creatures and magic but it’s also the 17th Century. How cool is that? The game puts you in between the growing conflict of the human colonial army and the native Elf tribes of the island. The gameplay is combat focused but it’s not a hack and slash. There is also an emphasis on deception and diplomacy. Think Witcher x Assassins Creed III x Frodo Baggins. Shut up and take my money already!
3. Griftlands
What do you mean the car was towed? I was in there 5 minutes.
Klei Entertainment’s new game looks to be potentially one of the coolest on the list. Klei Entertainment are the folks that brought us Shank, Mark of the Ninja and Don’t Starve making this one of the most anticipated of 2018. This new title is a Sci-Fi turn-based RPG with a cool pastel pencil artwork and emphasizes subduing enemies over killing them. The cast of playable characters all have their own agendas but find themselves aligning in common interest for money and fame. Add this one to your Steam wish list for sure.
2. God Eater 3
Cure it all with fire. Lots of fire. All the fire!
The God Eater series is back and better than ever for round 3. Bandai Namco’s legendary series looks like everything we want for Christmas. For those unfamiliar, God Eater games are monster hunter hack n’ slashers that reward the dedicated gamers who put in the time to clean house. It’s an eye candy grind session against the Gods. This time around there’s a new female character named Claire Victorious and dual wielding weapons. Because nothing says kill’em all like akimbo missile launchers! I’m sold already. The action is next level, the gameplay is tight, and the rage quits are a plenty. Put me in coach, I’m ready to play.
1. New Dragon Age Game
A typical day at the office fighting dragons saving the world. The usual.
The most hushed and mysterious entry on this list. It’s been shy of 4 years since we have had a Dragon Age game. Inquisition was released back in November of 2014 and we are more than ready for another. Although this game has not yet been officially announced by BioWare, we feel confident it’s coming based on comments from executive producer Mark Darrah on Twitter. We don’t even know for certain if it will be called Dragon Age 4 but regardless, fans are ready. There are strong rumors that Witcher III made the DA team feel a little outdone in world immersion, storytelling, and quests and now they want to take it up a notch. That is great news for fans. Be sure to look out for this one.
