Sword Art Online offers a plethora of great characters throughout the seasons. From fights and healing, to swords and adopted children, here are the best characters from Sword Art Online that are great.
10. Sachi
Sachi was an excellent supporting character in the SAO series. She gave a very humanistic feeling to the death game series, as she feared dying and hardly left the Town of New Beginnings. She felt safer once she realized how strong Kirito was, but ultimately died in the 27th Floor Labyrinth.
Reasons why Sachi is great:
- Excellent supporting character
- Gave a humanistic feeling to SAO
- Helped show how strong Kirito is and how this helped other members of the game.
- Was mentored by Kirito
9. Sister Azalia
Sister Azalia was a true saint in the SAO world. When Kirito arrived in the Underworld, she took him in and provided food, clothing, and shelter when he had no place else to go. She would go on to provide the same love and care to anyone who needed it
Reasons why Sister Azalia is great:
- Teacher in a church (Rulid Village)
- Taught Alice Scared Arts.
- In the church, she houses orphans.
- Took Kirito in when he needed it.
8. Lisbeth
Lisbeth is an excellent supporting character that makes a great impact in the SAO series. Also known as Rika, she is the town’s blacksmith- a great blacksmith at that.
Reasons why Lisbeth is great:
- Performed maintenance on Asuna’s Lambent Light sword
- Offered her best sword to Kirito when she was visited by him to create a different, custom sword for him.
- Insisted on going on a quest with Kirito in order to get a specific metal to create a new sword for him, even though she would risk her life doing this.
- As Kirito was near death in a fight, she came out of hiding and tried to boost his confidence to finish the battle.
- She was hit during this attack, but ultimately saved thanks to Kirito and a potion.
- Crafted an amazing sword for Kirito out of the dragon’s Crystallite Ingot
- Crafted Kirito’s white sword for free under the agreement that she would forever be his personal blacksmith.
7. Yui
Yui is an incredibly powerful supporting character that also gave this game a sense of family. Yui was adopted by Asuna and Kirito when she was found lost and wandering in the forest. She was adopted because she appeared child-like and innocent, creating the sense of the need for protection. However, viewers would come to find out that Yui had a lot more to her than just her role in Kirito and Asuna’s virtual family.
Reasons why Yui is great:
- Help create a sense of family in Asuna and Kirito’s virtual marriage and life
- Was a part of the Mental Health Counseling Program of Sword Art Online
- Is an Artificial Intelligence program
- Collapsed due to the game not allowing her to fulfill her full mental health counselor duties
- Ignored the Cardinal System’s orders to save Kirito and Asuna
- Navigation Pixie
6. Agil
Image
Agil is a great character in the SAO realm because he is such a genuine person. He makes sure that he is kind and helpful, while looking out for others continuously throughout the game. He is one of the first to defend the other characters from the beta testers.
Reasons why Agil is great:
- Very kind
- Gives Kirito a place to stay
- Helps players on lower floors
- An excellent leader on the battlefield
- Will help others no matter what the cost is.
- Very money centered, but spent all of that money helping lower-level players get better.
5. Leafa
Leafa, also referred to as Suguha, is an incredible recurring character throughout the series. She is an excellent fighter after she logged in to save her sibling, Kazuto. This stunning character would come to be a fan favorite, as she is as beautiful as she is intense.
Reasons why Leafa is great:
- Became a Kendo practitioner in order to protect her adopted sibling when he decided to quit Kendo.
- Became a very powerful fighter, following Asuna’s lead
- Powerful enough to beat of the Salamanders
- Helped Kirito on his journey to the World Tree
4. Klein
Klein is one of the supporting characters that we see Kirito befriend, sort of. Klein was a cool guy who became a leader of a guild and does well throughout his time in the series. He could have easily outed Kirito as a beta tester and turned the masses against him, but instead he sought out his wisdom to become better. Would this have been the same if Kirito was not as strong as he is? Who knows, all we know is Klein made the best out of his friendship with Kirito.
Reasons why Klein is great:
- Becomes friends with Kirito
- Recognizes Kirito as a beta tester
- Seeks out Kirito’s wisdom as a beta tester instead of forming a hatred towards Kirito
- A good comic character- something needed in a death game series
3. Eugeo
Eugeo comes in at number 3 because he is one of the best characters outside of the two main protagonists. He is a very strong fighter and viewers get to see a lot of character growth in Alicization. Eugeo also is an incredibly selfless character and one of Kirito’s greatest friends throughout the series. His ultimate act of self-sacrifice shows just how great of a friend he is to both Alice and Kirito.
Reasons why Eugeo is great:
- A very strong fighter
- A vast amount of character growth
- Selflessness when it comes to their journey to save Alice.
- Became an Integrity Knight to try to help save Alice.
- He and Kirito helped save two girls from being sexually assaulted when they were in school.
- The ultimate self-sacrifice: using his last bit of life and blood to transform himself into the iconic Blue Rose Sword, something that was used to help save Alice and a sword that Kirito would continue to carry with him.
2. Kirito
Coming in at number 2, we have Kirito, the main protagonist of the SAO series. He comes in just behind Asuna, only because I do not feel as if he has the same depth that Asuna does. This does not mean he is not an excellent character, however. Kirito is an incredibly selfless and powerful character in this series, he just has this bland personality that SAO creators could have improved drastically.
Reasons why Kirito is great:
- Kirito is insanely strong and does everything he can to get stronger.
- He knows he is this strong and powerful, and he uses this strength to act as the ‘Chosen One’ that fights in order to save everyone else.
- He will step into any fight in order to help save other characters he comes in contact with.
- He will go on significant quests to save other people.
- He had a very strong sense of what was right and wrong- and he stuck to those morals.
- He always took on the role of leadership, especially in fights.
- He took it upon himself to make others feel safe and protected.
- Made sure to take on a lot of solo missions in order to get stronger before putting other players’ lives in his hands.
1. Asuna
And finally, one of the best SAO characters in my opinion is Asuna. Asuna is just as much of a protagonist as Kirito, though we see the story through the eyes of Kirito. She has this depth about her that Kirito lacks both personality-wise and power-wise. She is both a fighter and a healer. Asuna is also just as strong as Kirito, though we do not get the chance to see her in action as much as we do Kirito. Viewers get to see her side of the story in the new SAO movie- Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, as the movie focuses more on her and gives viewers a new respect for Asuna.
Reasons why Asuna is great:
- She is a super powerful fighter, yet she takes on more than just the role of a fighter.
- She is very fast and powerfully skilled, earning her the nickname of ‘Lightning Flash.’
- Seems to have no fear of death, instead focuses on taking care of others.
- She would put herself in the way of danger in order to protect Kirito, even if that means losing her life herself.
- She takes on this motherly role when it comes to taking care of others, especially Yui.
- Her self-sacrifice and motherly attitude contribute to her title of a ‘Healer.’
- She was inexperienced and a loner before entering the game, making her the definition of an underdog.
- Became an incredibly powerful fighter, healer, friend, spouse, and adoptive parent despite all of the odds being stacked against her.
