What are Vitamins and Why are they important?
Vitamins are consumable items that the player can obtain through stores or find in the Safari Zone. They can be applied to Pokemon to make them stronger. Each Pokemon can consume a total of five Vitamins per Region the player unlocks, which increases as the player progresses in the game, so when you start in Kanto, each Pokemon has a limit of five Vitamins each. Each Vitamin can be found in specific Regions: Protein in Kanto, Calcium in Hoenn, and Carbos in Unova. Each Vitamin adjusts one stat, so it’s important to think about how you use your Vitamins. The Vitamins can affect the Pokemon’s attack bonus (Protein), attack bonus percentage (Calcium), and the number of steps it takes to hatch a Pokemon (Carbos).
Protein
Increases Pokemon Attack bonus, which is fully in effect when the Pokemon experiences a breeding cycle. Increases the steps required to hatch each Pokemon by 20 steps. Proteins are available to the player in Kanto.
Protein can be used to make Pokemon stronger and can add as many as possible to each (depending on how many Regions you’ve unlocked so far) to get the best possible Pokemon Attack possible. The Proteins are reusable, so if the player chooses, they can move Proteins from one Pokemon to another. The side effect of increasing their Attack is 20 steps added to the number of steps a Pokemon needs to hatch, although it’s well worth the extra patience from the player once they see how much stronger their Pokemon has gotten.
When to use Protein
- Grinding Pokemon by hatching
- Increases their Attack
- Attempting to get all the Attack Achievements
How to Obtain Protein
Protein is purchasable in some towns, such as the Indigo Plateau (Kanto) and Pokemon League (Sinnoh), at the starting price of 10,000 Pokedollars. It can also be found in Dungeons, including the Cerulean Cave (Kanto) and Ice Path (Johto), though the player would need to clear the Dungeons at least 500 times for a chance at finding Protein there. However, some Dungeons require fewer Clears to have a chance at finding the item. Pyrite Colosseum, Mt. Battle, and Deep Colosseum all require at least 100 Clears, while Dungeons like Pyrite Cave, Lost Hotel, and Victory Road Kalos need 250 Clears. The Vitamin can also be found in the Safari Zone (Kanto), though the chances of obtaining one are 1.25%.
Calcium
Increases Pokemon Attack bonus %, which comes into effect when the Pokemon who has this is hatched. Increases the steps required to hatch the Pokemon by 20 steps. Calcium becomes available when the player reaches Hoenn.
Calcium is similar to Protein, since they both increase a Pokemon’s Attack, though unlike Protein, Calcium increases the Pokemon’s Attack bonus percentage, which is the overall total of what the Pokemon can receive for each hatch. They’re reusable, so they can be transferred from Pokemon to Pokemon, and can be added until the player reaches their maximum limit. The side effect increases the number of steps a Pokemon needs to hatch by 20, but it’s well worth it for all players who like to grind their stats.
When to use Calcium
- Grinding Pokemon by hatching
- Increasing their Attack bonus
- Attempting to get all the Attack Achievements
How to Obtain Calcium
Calcium is purchasable in some towns, such as Pummelo Island and Wyndon Stadium, at the starting price of 50,000 Pokedollars. It can also be found in two Dungeons in the Hoenn Region: Cipher Key Lair and Citadark Isle. The chances of obtaining one through that method are 0.01% - <0.01% at the beginning of each Dungeon, which later increases the more Clears each area gets. 100 Clears for each Dungeon raises the chances of obtaining Calcium to 0.22% (CKL) and 0.11% (CI), 250 Clears give the player 0.54% (CKL) and 0.27% (CI), and 500 Clears maxes it out to 1.06% (CKL) and 0.53% (CI). The Vitamin can also be found in the Safari Zone (Kalos), though the chances of obtaining one is 1.25%.
Carbos
Reduces Pokemon steps when hatching. Carbos become available when the player reaches Unova.
Carbos doesn’t increase Pokemon Attack, although it does lower the threshold for how many steps are needed per Pokemon, and thus, saves time on Hatching. There’s not much else to say, aside from how it can be used more than once for various Pokemon and has a limit tied to how many Regions the player has unlocked in the game.
When to use Carbos
- Reduces the number of steps a Pokemon needs to hatch
- Reduces the amount of time to hatch Pokemon
How to Obtain Carbos
Carbos are purchasable in some towns, such as the Pokemon League Unova and Pokemon League Alola, at a starting price of 100,000 Pokedollars. It can also be found in the Hoenn Dungeons, though it doesn’t become available to the player until they reach Unova. The Vitamin can also be found in the Safari Zone (Kalos), though the chances of obtaining one is 1.25%.
