Who doesn’t know about Mortal Kombat’s comic relief, Johnny Cage? He may be annoying, cocky…maybe a bit narcissistic at times, BUT he is a good person deep down!
And as a famous movie star, Johnny makes sure to always look his best for his fans. Just look at some of his best MK1 skins and try to tell me Cage doesn’t have swag.
#1: Hollywood Knight
That’s just strawberry jam on his shirt, right?
Hollywood Knight in action:
Start at 0:53
The first skin we’ll look at on this list is a New Era skin called Hollywood Knight! This skin has a simple palette of black, white, and blo—RED! To unlock Hollywood Knight, you have to level up your Character Mastery.
Hollywood Knight may seem pretty simple in terms of style. But the pattern of bright, red spots (which is totally not blood) against Johnny’s white shirt looks so cool. Don’t mess with this Hollywood star unless you want to help expand the pattern on his shirt.
#2: Knock Out
A total knockout with this skin!
Knock Out in action:
Start at 1:00
Another New Era skin of Johnny’s to check out is Knock Out. Knock Out has a palette of red and black and some pretty cool tattoos to go with the fit. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Knock Out as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
Can I just say that red and black is always a great combination? I especially love how bright the red is for the pants and how it stands out so much with the black top. And people tend to think of a person with tattoos as someone who shouldn’t be messed with, so watch out for Johnny’s drip and his fists!
#3. Glitterati
Where’s the glitter, Cage? WHERE’S THE GLITTER!?
Glitterati skin in action:
Start at 1:05
Now we’ll move on to the Union of Light skins for Johnny starting with Glitterati. The Glitterati skin has a monochromatic palette with different shades of red. You can unlock Glitterati in Mortal Kombat 1’s story mode.
I didn’t know what the heck a “glitterati”, or if it was even real, so I looked it up! Fun fact: a glitterati is a group of people who take part in show business or fashion. So basically, Johnny’s part of the Illuminati of Glamour.
#4. Flair for Dramatics
Johnny Cage is the king of being extra
Flair for Dramatics in action:Start at 1:19
The next best Union of Light skin for Johnny Cage is Flair for Dramatics. This skin contains a similar palette to Glitterati, but it stands out a bit more because of the added orange color. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Flair for Dramatics as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
Orange itself is a dramatic color due to its boldness and it represents traits such as confidence and optimism. Johnny has the confidence down, I’ll tell you that, but orange can also be a welcoming color. Despite how people can find Johnny annoying when they first meet him, if you take the time to get to know him, you’ll find that the actor is actually a decent guy to hang out with!
#5. Horror Show
Come on, it’s not THAT scary
Horror Show in action:
Start at 1:23
Going into the Order of Darkness skins, the first up is Horror Show. This skin’s palette includes plenty of dark blue. You can unlock Horror Show by playing through Invasion Mode.
In horror movies, many scenes take place in the dark of night and they tend to have a bluish tint to portray a sense of fear. Dark blue doesn’t portray a sense of calm like regular blue, so it makes sense for Horror Show to have dark blue as the dominant color. Even so, I don’t see this skin as anything “horrific”, but it’s still a cool skin!
#6. Dark Comedy
Hey, where’s your sense of dark humor?
Dark Comedy in action:Start at 1:33
Dark Comedy is another Order of Darkness skin that also uses the color blue. But in this skin’s case, Dark Comedy’s palette has different shades of blue instead of just one. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Dark Comedy as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
Johnny Cage tends to make themes such as blood and gore comedic, especially with his fatalities. His dark humor is one the best things about Mortal Kombat and Dark Comedy represents that so well with its royal blue. Not only is he Hollywood royalty, but Johnny Cage is the king of dark comedy.
#7. Suspense
H2Bro isn’t going to like you taking his purple, Johnny
Suspense in action:
Start at 1:42
Don’t worry, I won’t leave you in SUSPENSE about this next Order of Darkness skin (see what I did there? You know, cause the skin is called—I’ll stop now). Anyway, Suspense has a palette of purple and gray with purple being the bolder color of the two. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Suspense as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
We all have felt suspense before and what’s more suspenseful than a mystery movie? Purple itself is a color often associated with mystery. It’s perfect for Johnny Cage’s Suspense skin!
#8: Method Actor
“Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.”
Method Actor in action:Start at 2:06
Okay, I think you already knew an Illinois Johnny skin was going to be on this list. Method Actor is the common Illinois Johnny skin with a palette of brown shades. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Method Actor as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
Method Actor is a clear parody of the famous adventurer Indiana Jones, and Johnny even wore this skin during the production of a movie. I think Method Actor is a nice little nod to the adventurer as well as Harrison Ford himself, the actor who plays Indiana Jones. Ford is a great actor and Cage…well, he’s an actor.
#9: Movie Kombat
You do NOT want to get kicked by this man
Movie Kombat in action:Start at 1:58
May I just say, Jean-Claude Van Damme is one of the best actors of all time, and I love that he was included in Mortal Kombat 1 in some way! This particular JCVD skin called Movie Kombat has a palette of white, red, and gold. If you purchase the Premium Edition, Kollector’s Edition, or buy Kombat Pack 1, you can get the JVCD skin along with palettes.
As most Mortal Kombat fans probably know, Liu Kang’s design was based on Bruce Lee, a famous actor and martial artist. Not only that, but Johnny Cage’s design is very similar to Van Damme as well, which is cool because two of Mortal Kombat’s main characters exist because of two amazing martial artists! Rest in peace Bruce Lee, and know that you are missed even to this day.
#10: Sudden Death
YES! I LOVE SUDDEN DEATH!
Sudden Death in action:
Start at 2:00
Sudden Death is another JCVD amazing Jean-Claude Van Damme skin! This skin has a palette of yellow, red, purple, and orange. If you purchase the Premium Edition, Kollector’s Edition, or buy Kombat Pack 1, you can get the JVCD skin along with palettes.
You know, Sudden Death is a real movie starring Van Damme as he stops a group of terrorists at a hockey game. It’s one of my top three favorite Van Damme movies with Universal Soldier being my all-time favorite! Maybe the bright colors in JCVD’s shorts in this skin are a reference to the movie as Van Damme played a former fireman in Sudden Death and warm colors such as yellow and red can represent fire.
Look, if you’re not a Johnny Cage fan, I totally get it. BUT you can’t lie and say these skins aren’t pretty freaking cool! I mean, come on, he has a Van Damme skin for Elder Gods’ sake! Just shut up, and let Mortal Kombat 1 take your money okay!?
