While she was not the first woman to appear in Mortal Kombat, Princess Kitana has been probably the most iconic female kombatant since her debut in Mortal Kombat II. No longer the adopted daughter and personal assassin of the evil Shao Kahn, the princess lived peacefully with her loving mother and sister until the events of Mortal Kombat 1.
And as a member of Outworld’s royal family, Kitana obviously has a wardrobe fit for royalty! Why don’t we take a look at a few of the princess’ best Mortal Kombat 1 skins?
#1: New Commander
Make her mad, she’ll send a whole army after you (and her sister)
New Commander in action:
Start at 2:42
After General Shao’s imprisonment, Kitana was made the commander of Outworld’s army by Empress Mileena, and rightfully so! New Commander is a common New Era skin for Kitana with a monochromatic palette of blue. To unlock New Commander, you have to level up your Character Mastery.
While the different shades of blue are unique and indeed beautiful, what I find the most interesting about New Commander is the magenta color found on Kitana’s belt. I believe the color is supposed to symbolize the relationship between Kitana and Mileena. However, the color is barely noticeable, so I guess that’s meant to show how despite Mileena’s status as empress, Kitana is still an important figure in Outworld herself as princess.
#2: Second Born
Hey, only by a few seconds!
Second Born in action:Start at 2:47
Despite her and Mileena being twins, Kitana is actually the youngest of the two Outworld princesses. Second Born, another common Kitana skin, has a palette containing red, white, and blue. To unlock Second Born, you have to level up your Character Mastery.
As the second born child of Sindel and Jerrod, it was obvious that Mileena would become the heir to the throne because she was the oldest. But despite this, Outworld’s people made it clear that they wanted Kitana to take the throne instead of her sister. After seeing Kitana and Mileena’s tower endings, however, I’m sure Kitana is very happy to see her people not only show respect for her, but for Mileena as well.
#3: Sudden Backdraft
Yep, this princess can create some serious backdraft with those fans
Sudden Backdraft in action:
Start at 2:59
Not only are her steel fans as sharp as…well steel, but what makes them even more dangerous are the extreme winds they can produce. The New Era skin seen above, which is called Sudden Backdraft, has a palette with colors such as orange, red, and yellow. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Sudden Backdraft as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
Backdraft is a current of air or water that flows backwards or when a fire consumes all the available oxygen and suddenly explodes when it comes into contact with more oxygen. I think the skin Sudden Backdraft represents both definitions of this term. Of course, backdraft is probably just referring to the air Kitana’s fans produce, but the warm colors in Sudden Backdraft could symbolize fire as well.
#4: Outworld’s Eternal Flame
That burning feeling in your chest…oh, Kitana just ripped your heart out
Outworld’s Eternal Flame in action:Start at 3:18
Speaking of fire, here we have another New Era skin, which will be the last New Era skin we will look at on this list, called Outworld’s Eternal Flame. The skin has a palette with colors like red and black. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Outworld’s Eternal Flame as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
Kitana was seen as a symbol of hope for Outworld since, as I mentioned before, her people wanted her to become empress after Sindel seeing that she is more level-headed than Mileena. But while Mileena was still made empress despite their protests, Kitana was made into the commander of Outworld’s army and she earned the respect of Outworld’s citizens with her courage and steadfast resolve. She truly is Outworld’s eternal flame, the light in the darkness that Outworld needs.
#5: True Edenian
Just how long can Edenians live for!?
True Edenian in action:Start at 5:02
Moving on to Kitana’s Union of Light skins, it’s only fitting that we start with True Edenian! True Edenian’s palette is pretty simple with light blue and white as its colors. To unlock True Edenian, you have to level up your Character Mastery.
The Edenian race originated from the realm of Edenia and they resemble humans in appearance. While they appear to look like humans, there are major differences between them and us with some of the most obvious ones being their long life spans and magical abilities. I mean, if Kitana is over 10,000 years old now, I don’t think Outworld has to worry about losing the royal family for a long, LONG time (unless something unfortunate happens…).
#6: Pure at Heart
Um, Kitana, I think pink is Mileena’s color
Pure at Heart in action:Start at 5:07
Kitana has one of the purest hearts of all the characters in Mortal Kombat 1 (along with Smoke and Reptile of course!). Pure at Heart is a lovely common Union of Light skin that has a palette containing pink, purple, and gold. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Pure at Heart as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
As I’m sure you’ve noticed, pink is the dominant color in Pure at Heart. Pink is a color that symbolizes love and compassion, two qualities that Kitana definitely has. And Ashrah herself has said that Kitana has no evil in her soul, which I believe to be true!
#7: Regicide
Shao Kahn, you better watch your back
Regicide in action:Start at 5:35
The last of the Union of Light skins on the list is Regicide, another common skin. Regicide is a skin with a palette of red, black, and silver. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Regicide as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
The meaning of the word “regicide” is the purposeful killing of a monarch, such as a king. In Mortal Kombat 11, Kitana actually succeeded in killing Shao Kahn and became empress of Outworld. Kitana did lead an assault against General Shao in her MK1 ending, and while the general did manage to escape, I believe history will repeat itself with Kitana ending Shao’s life once again.
#8: Pure Jubilation
After surviving the events Mortal Kombat 1, I’d be pretty happy too
Pure Jubilation in action:Start at 7:04
I sure felt pure jubilation when Mortal Kombat 1 finally came out! Pure Jubilation is Shiva Ranatai skin with a palette of blue, white, and gold. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Pure Jubilation as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
You know, the moment I saw the word “jubilation” in this skin’s title, I thought about Jubileus from the game Bayonetta. The name Jubileus actually came from the word “jubilee”, which is a special anniversary for an event. In Mortal Kombat 1’s story mode, Kitana is seen wearing a Shiva Ranatai costume during a festival that occurred in Outworld, so I guess that counts as a jubilee, huh?
#9: Gleeful Reveler
Try not to look too happy while holding that knife, Kitana
Gleeful Reveler in action:Start at 7:08
I like to think that Kitana was having fun at the Sun Do Festival…until well, PLOT happened. Anyway, Gleeful Reveler is another common Shiva Ranatai skin that includes a palette of magenta, purple, and gold. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Gleeful Reveler as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
A reveler is just someone enjoying themselves in the most outrageous way possible, a real partygoer! I can see Mileena going to parties and such, but Kitana? Probably the only party event she’s ever been to is the Sun Do festival, and even then it’s more than likely because she needed to make an appearance as one of the princesses of Outworld.
#10: Sun Do Gala
Work it, princess! Show ‘em what royalty looks like!
Sun Do Gala in action:Start at 7:17
Kitana doesn’t need to go to a gala to show off her fancy wardrobe! But if she did, her Shiva Ranatai skin Sun Do Gala would be perfect for the occasion with its palette of red, blue, and gold. There are no specific requirements needed to obtain Sun Do Gala as you can get it from the Shrine or purchase it from the store.
As a princess of Outworld, Kitana must always look presentable in front of her people. With her beauty and fashionable clothing, I don’t think that’s a hard task for Kitana and her family. She must have gotten her sense of style from Sindel, I just know it!
Kitana may only be a princess, but she’s out here dressing like a queen! Show this Edenian goddess some respect and get these gorgeous skins for her ASAP. Sure, they’ll probably be ruined by blood…and guts…and maybe a heart or two. But just let Kitana have her five seconds of epicness before the fight starts, okay!?
