Hades is a dungeon crawler where you play as Zagreus trying to escape the Underworld. Along the way, you are helped by Greek gods and characters from Greek mythology. Some of those characters offer Companions – items that have a summoning ability that can help you on your run.
To obtain a Companion, you need to befriend characters by giving them Nectar. Every Companion can be equipped before your run and can be upgraded with Ambrosia before or during your run after each boss fight. At their highest level, Companions can be used up to five times per run.
There are a total of six Companions in the game; you can only equip one per run. Each one of them offers a unique ability. Here is my ranking of the Companions, from worst to best:
6. Rib
I would trust this guy with my life
Your Summon creates a distraction with 250 health, provoking your foes to attack it until it dies.
- Rib distracts foes by screaming at them.
- He can take friendly fire and will remain until he is killed.
- Along with Shady, Rib can be used against Hades at the early stages of the game.
What Rib Excels In:
- Distracting large numbers of foes at once.
- Attracting shots from ranged attacks.
- Fighting against Hades.
Choose Rib if:
- You want to make fighting multiple foes easier, especially during boss fights where the boss is assisted by smaller foes.
- You want to get the fire from shooting foes away from you.
- You want to use a Companion in a fight with Hades.
How to get Rib:
Obtain a high level of trust with Skelly, then gift him Ambrosia.
5. Shady
His face looks so blank...
Your Summon deals 1000 damage in an area and drops a smattering of Health (four pickups, each restoring 10HP), Darkness (one pickup worth 10 Darkness), and Obols (one pickup worth 30 Obols).
- Shady automatically targets the enemy closest to Zagreus, but his targeting has a very short range, meaning that he can miss.
- Among the damage-dealing Companions, Shady deals the least damage. However, his drops can come in handy during boss fights, especially if you are using Boons or Abilities that affect the resources dropped.
- Shady is the only Companion that has no use restrictions; along with Rib, he can be used while fighting Hades at the early stages of the game, and he can be used against Charon, too.
What Shady Excels In:
- Triggering resource-dependent Boons, such as Demeter’s Nourished Soul that makes any health effect more potent (+30% at the Common Rarity level).
- Giving an extra boost of health during boss fights.
- Helping you save up Darkness and Obols, especially when empowered by Poseidon’s Ocean’s Bounty that increases the drop value, or Chaos’ Eclipse that makes Darkness and Gemstone rewards worth at least 75% higher.
Choose Shady if:
- You are struggling with maintaining Life Total and would like a quick way to get more Health.
- If you are fighting static enemies that can be easily targeted.
- If you are on a drop-collection run and would like to earn Darkness or Obols.
How to get Shady:
Obtain a high level of trust with Sisyphus by completing his quest and offering him Ambrosia.
4. Battie
I would honestly buy a plushie like that
Your Summon deals 2500 damage in an area near your closest foe, then continually down the line.
- Battie summons Megaera to fight alongside you.
- She will deal 2500 damage in a line consisting of small circles.
- Cannot be used against any of the Fury sisters.
What Battie Excels In:
- Dealing a lot of damage at once.
- Damaging several foes when applicable.

Choose Fidi if:
- You are fighting several foes or a boss.
- You want to temporarily freeze your enemies.
- You are fighting foes who are hard to target.
How to get Fidi:
Obtain a high level of trust with Dusa, then gift her Ambrosia.
2. Antos
He looks very friednly
Your Summon deals 1500 damage to two foes, one after another.
- Among the Companions, Antos deals a heavy amount of damage.
- If he can’t find two targets, he will target one foe twice, dealing a total of 3000 damage.
- The attack happens after a brief delay but does not miss as long as the target(s) is on screen and isn’t invulnerable.
What Antos Excels In:
- Dealing heavy damage to up to two foes.
- Dealing increased damage to one foe if they are the only one on screen, making him great for boss fights.
- Reliably targeting foes.
Choose Antos if:
- You want to certainly hit a foe for a lot of damage.
- You want to deal increased heavy damage to a singular foe.
- You want the damage to be auto-targeting.
How to get Antos:
Obtain a high level of trust with both Achilles and Patroclus, then gifting Achilles Ambrosia. You don’t have to gift Ambrosia to Patroclus.
1. Mort
What a long boy
Your Summon deals 3500 damage in an area in front of you after a brief delay.
- Mort will summon Thanatos to aid you, who will deal increased damage in an area near you.
What Mort Excels In:
- Dealing the most damage per hit out of all Companions.
- Dealing damage in an area.
- Delayed damage.
