On April 30, 2020, Ubisoft released their gameplay trailer for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the newest game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. While this trailer doesn’t really show any actual gameplay, it does give a look at the in-game graphics, and a couple of the abilities we’ll get to use in the game. As Valhalla gets closer to release, we’ve been getting more information about it. Here’s what we know so far.
Story
Valhalla’s story will immerse you in the Viking life
In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla you play as Eivor, a Viking raider and fearless warrior. You will lead your clan from Norway to ninth century England and will conquer the land while building your settlement by any means necessary. Unlike previous games where your character is a blank slate as far as personality, Eivor will have a distinct personality already set as the game starts.
In Valhalla, you will be introduced to four kingdoms in England: Wessex, Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia. Also, while the game will mainly take place in England, you will be able to travel back to Norway.
Narrative Director Darby McDevitt stated that the overall narrative will build on the story that’s been going on through Origins and Odyssey, tying up various plot points that have been established in those games. While specifics haven’t been given, it’s been confirmed that Layla’s story will continue in the present day, and there will be some surprising and unexpected content for this section of the story.
Gameplay Details
You’ll be able to build your character to your liking
There will be a variety of ways to fight in Valhalla, with plenty of weapons and a skill tree you can customize to suit your playstyle. These will give you the options of fighting in close range combat, from a distance, or even go for stealth kills. There will also be raids and assaults, which will be large scale battles on battlefields and fortifications.
Valhalla’s creative director Ashraf Ismail has confirmed that they are going to be bringing back aspects of stealth gameplay from past games while giving them a new spin. Social Stealth, sneaking and stalking zones are examples of returning features.
Another large aspect of the game will be your settlement. As you progress through the game, you will bring various things back and grow this settlement. This can include people, resources, and other surprises that Ismail did not want to reveal. Your settlement will be the center of your quests and decisions that you make throughout the game. Lead Producer Julien Laferrière stated that you will see the effects and consequences of the choices and alliances you make play out within your settlement.
Mounts will be part of the game, and while it has been stated there will be mounts other than horses, there’s no word as to what those will be.
