10. There Are Always New Updates
While most games get their biggest audience and player base from day 1 and the number dwindle from there, Minecraft is not one of these games. Instead, Minecraft seems to break record every time it has a new update to offer to the fanbase.
Updates keep the game fresh. Before Microsoft acquired Minecraft, the amount of updates the game was receiving was quite low and far between, and this might’ve caused the popularity drop of Minecraft. With the frequent updates, we saw the fans come back and before anyone knew it, even more people were playing the game.
If the game was kept the way it was a decade ago, not a lot of people would’ve cared about Minecraft, and it would simply have been a relic of the past, with a very dedicated albeit small fanbase still playing it. Instead, Minecraft, releasing a new and intriguing update almost every year, has a gigantic fanbase and it is only growing with every update that brings something new to do into the game world.
9. It is Available on a Lot of Different Platforms
If Minecraft was only playable on Windows, and on nothing else, the popularity of the game wouldn’t be what it is today. Even if you don’t have a computer, you can play Minecraft on your gaming console, or even on your smartphone. That’s amazing, right?
In addition to existing on every console on the planet (bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point), the game is also available on Mac, Linux, and so on. The game also doesn’t require a strong computer; so, overall, the accessibility of playing the game is high, which makes the player base and the fanbase even bigger.
8. You Can Use Your Creativity in a Lot of Different Ways
What I’m trying to get at is the fact that there really is no limit to what you can do in Minecraft. The only barrier here is creativity and from the amazing builds to different play styles we’ve seen and did ourselves over the years, it is really easy to see why people from all kind of different backgrounds, hobbies, interests, and so on have so much fun playing Minecraft.
7. It is Interesting For All Ages
Why? I can hear some people asking. Why is the game fun for every age group? Well, it’s because the open nature of the game, along with the intricate and beautifully designed mechanics, makes it so that you can make Minecraft into a very complex gaming experience or a very simple and fun one.
Because of the nature of the game, every age group seems to love the game. And because of that, the popularity of Minecraft is much, much higher than games that focus on one particular age group as their player base.
6. The Amount of Different Servers
The amount of different servers that you can play on also play a very important part for keeping the game’s fanbase as high as it is.
The popularity is definitely helped with the fact that you have numerous servers where you can do basically anything. From parkour servers to faction servers to SMP, there might not be a limit on what you can do and play on these servers.
Especially popular multiplayer servers like Hypixel, and so on, gives the opportunity to the players to play dozens of different minigames that are more fun than each other. There are even MMORPG-like servers that require hundreds of hours of gameplay just for one server.
Honestly, with such a dedicated fanbase and a huge multiplayer community, it is basically impossible for Minecraft to not be popular.
5. The Amount of Content Creators Surrounding the Game
Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if your game is being played by famous creators all over the world, the popularity of the game will be much higher as a result. Because of this, Mojang and Microsoft has also been giving spotlights and opportunities to players as well, which is always nice to see from a developer.
From famous SMPs to different types of players and content creators for the game, the game’s popularity is only getting more and more, and as it is getting more and more, even more content creators are popping up. It’s a great cycle that keeps this more than decade old game one of the most popular in the world.
4. The Sandbox Nature of the Game
There are also no end goals really, and the goals of what you want to do in the game is set by you. This makes it so that you never feel like you are ‘done’ with the game, and that the game has ‘nothing more to offer’. Which is an amazing tool to keep you playing indefinitely.
We all know that this is not the case, the game lacking substance, that is, and the endless world of Minecraft keeps giving you new things to do, experiment, and have a lot fun while doing so. This keeps the players playing, like me, who is been playing the game even after a decade, and every time I launch the game again it feels like a completely new and enjoyable experience.
3. Adventure Maps and Other Custom Maps
The amount of quality-made custom maps for the game also keeps a fresh perspective on the game and makes it so that you can always hop on a new adventure that is created by amazing builders and mapmakers.
From parkour maps to full-on adventure maps, which some are as detailed and finely made as actual video games from different genres, are countless in numbers and whatever you are looking for, I am absolutely sure that you can find something to enjoy from a decade long history of people making great adventure maps.
Some adventures maps also employ resource packs, or even mods, and because of this, what can be achieved with a custom map is even more exciting than ever, and with every new update, there are also updates to things like commander blocks which makes the maps even more detailed.
2. Its Simple Yet Brilliant Design
If you dabbled at any point with redstone, you know what I mean. The game’s mechanics can be very simple, but amazingly complex things can be created from what is given to the player. The possibilities are endless, and people who don’t have any coding experience or other similar things can create beautifully complex things inside the game world.
Because of this, the game appeals to people who want a tightly knit game with fun mechanics, but more experienced players can bend those mechanics to also create amazing and complex things from them. It is amazing that Minecraft can offer both of those things with the exact same game design is simply brilliant, and one of the reasons why it is so popular.
1. The Amount of Great Mods Made for the Game
A lot of games that have huge fanbases will receive mods, that’s for sure. But no game has a modding community like Minecraft. People remade the entire game over and over with technical mods, adventure mods, mods that add quality-of-life to the base game, mods that completely create a different game, it’s all here.
If you want to play an RPG, you can. If you want to fight dragons or create nuclear reactors that provide energy for your adventures into opening up portals to different dimensions, you can do all of those things, and much, much more.
Even if you think you’ve played the base game enough, the mods are still here for you, and offer as much, if not more, play time than the base game itself.
