Despite Minecraft’s initial label as a survival game, one of the things that makes it great is how you survive. For many players “survive and thrive” would be a better description. And there’s no better way than to do it in style. Thankfully, Minecraft gives players a plethora of options to choose from and its player base has never failed in delivering some of the most amazing and innovative creations. Here’s my Top 15 Best Minecraft House Designs in ascending order.
15) Hillside Dirt House a.k.a. The Hobbit Hole

This list would not be complete without the enigmatic Hillside Dirt House. Almost every Minecraft player has built one of these at some point. Its practicality and simplicity just can’t be beat. However, as evidenced by many wonderful builds, the Hillside House is not just a starter’s house. It can be developed into something worthy of imitation with a little inspiration from a particular fantasy franchise.
With a little bit of sprucing up, the Hillside House becomes what many would deem the Hobbit Hole. Simply decorate the front of the house with a rounded style (complete with a few windows, lights, a chimney, and yard care) and you have the perfect quaint abode for a day’s adventure. One of the great things about this house is how easy it is to carve out the inside and decorate. Keep it simple and keep digging tunnels all the way through. Then, line those tunnels with some wood and stucco and… bam… there you go.
What’s great about The Hobbit Hole:
- One of the most instinctual and easy builds
- Deceptively deep
- Extremely quaint and cozy
- Often the first house that everyone builds
14) The Dirt Hut a.k.a. The Other Beginners Build

Of course, this list would anger many gamers and rightly so if I failed to mention the infamous dirt hut. If you didn’t dig that hillside house the first time you played Minecraft, you no doubt built one of these. In fact, they are so ubiquitous I have placed them one step higher than the Hillside House. Once again, however, these can be improved with a little bit of finesse.
As highlighted by the video, dirt houses can be more than just one door with a one-block-wide window on each face. They can be as big as you want with as many levels. However, one thing that really complements the Dirt Hut is, of course, nature. A great way to do this is to use dirt for what it’s meant to do – grow grass! In addition to this, vines are a lovely addition that also allow players to take a quick trip up the side of your house. Wood is also a natural addition to this palette.
What's great about The Dirt Hut:
- Also the most instinctual build
- The meme-ist of abodes
- At one with nature
- Demonstrates you’re not afraid of Creepers
13) Mushroom House

As soon as many beginning Minecraft players notice that you can grow giant mushrooms with bonemeal they begin to think something. Maybe I can build a house out of that mushroom! And so the mushroom house was born. You can make these as small or as large as you like, as long as it’s made of any type of mushroom block.
The great thing about the mushroom house is the fact that it’s unhateable. I mean, you can’t hate on a house that’s made of one of the most signature blocks in the game. It appeals to the fantasy aspect in all of us, and is extremely simple to execute well. Whether you want just one giant mushroom or like to chain several together in a giant mushroom-tree-complex-thing, you can be guaranteed that you’ll get the respect you deserve for your abode.
What’s great about The Mushroom House:
- Just try to hate on it
- Simple, charming build that is sure to get respect
- A go-to option for fantasy build lovers
