Sometimes the swords and spears just don’t cut it (ha-ha.) Sometimes you need something with more brute force, a weapon that can both crush and cut at the same time. And that’s where axes come in. Axes can be used as both weapons and tools, making them very versatile items. Terraria has plenty of these awesome tools to choose from, and here are some of the best.
5. Pickaxe Axe
This is one heck of a tool. The Pickaxe Axe is simultaneously a pickaxe and axe. It is the best pre-Plantera axe/pickaxe available, coming in at 110% axe power. This tool allows you to mine Chlorophyte Ore, which will be very important later on.
Pickaxe Axe stats:
- Damage: 35
- Knockback: 4.75 (average)
- Critical strike chance: 4%
- 110% axe power
- 200% pickaxe power
- Use time: 25 (fast)
- Can mine Chlorophyte
How to get the Pickaxe Axe:
- To craft the Pickaxe Axe, you must first defeat all three mechanical bosses in Hardmode.
- Once you have defeated all three bosses, combine one of each soul dropped by the bosses with 18 Hallowed Bars (also dropped by the three bosses) to craft the Pickaxe Axe
4. Spectre Hamaxe
The Spectre Hamaxe is a powerful mix between a hammer and an axe, having both the capability of cutting down trees and hammering blocks. It has decent damage, extra range, and strong axe power, and also looks pretty cool.
Spectre Hamaxe stats:
- Damage: 60
- Knockback: 7 (strong)
- +3 range
- Critical strike chance: 4%
- 150% axe power
- 90% hammer power
- Use time: 28 (average)
How to get the Spectre Hamaxe:
- Begin by mining Chlorophyte in the underground Jungle after defeating all three mechanical bosses in Hardmode. Craft 36 bars with the Chlorophyte Ore.
- Travel to the Dungeon (after Plantera has been defeated) and farm enemies for Dungeon Spirits. Collect 18 Ectoplasm dropped by Dungeon Spirits.
- Go back home and smelt the Chlorophyte Ore into bars at an Adamantite/Titanium Forge, then combine those with the Ectoplasm to create 18 Spectre Bars.
- Craft the Spectre Hamaxe at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil.
3. Picksaw
If you thought the Pickaxe Axe was cool, then the Picksaw is even better. This crazy fast axe-pickaxe combo is one of the best axes in the game, with a whopping 125% axe power. While this axe has less axe power than the Spectre Hamaxe, its speed and ability to act as a pickaxe place it at number 3.
Picksaw stats:
- Damage: 34
- Knockback: 5.5 (average)
- +1 range
- Critical strike chance: 4%
- 125% axe power
- 210% pickaxe power
- Use time: 16 (very fast)
How to get the Picksaw:
- The Picksaw can only be obtained from the Jungle temple’s Golem boss. The boss has a 12.5% chance to drop it, so keep your fingers crossed!
2. Stardust, Solar, Vortex, and Nebula Hamaxes
Do you want an axe from space? Then these are for you! The four Luminite Hamaxes are endgame-level tools and are some of the best in the game. All four post-Moon Lord axes are both powerful axes and powerful hammers, saving you an extra hotbar space.
Luminite Hamaxe stats:
- Damage: 60
- Knockback: 7 (strong)
- +4 range
- Critical strike chance: 4%
- 150% axe power
- 100% hammer power
- Use time: 28 (average)
How to the Luminite Hamaxes:
- Begin by defeating the Lunatic Cultist boss at the Dungeon (make sure you have defeated Golem)
- Defeat the lunar pillars that invade your world
- Slay Moon Lord once he invades your world
- Smelt the Luminite Ore into Luminite Bars
- Combine 14 of any Lunar Fragment obtained from the pillars with 12 Luminite Bars at a Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil to craft the desired hamaxe
1. The Axe
A mix between an electric guitar and an axe? Sign me up. This axe is the best in the game with a crazy 175% axe power and plays musical notes every time the player swings it. How cool is that? On top of all that, it has respectable damage and also acts as a hammer.
The Axe stats:
- Damage: 72
- Knockback: 7.25 (very strong)
- +1 range
- Critical strike chance: 4%
- 175% axe power
- 100% hammer power

How to get The Axe:
- The Axe can be tricky to obtain. It has a 2% chance of being dropped by Plantera, which means you may have to fight the boss several times.
Now that you know about some of the best axes in Terraria, go out and find one! Remember, it’s personal taste that defines “best” in this game. Use what works for you. After all, that’s how the game was designed. Terraria has loads of content to offer, and you’ll never be without something to do. Venture on, Terrarians!
