Top 10 New RPG Games (2018-2019)
In my opinion RPGs are what gaming is all about. I love making a character to my exact specifications and then throwing them in to situations I could never experience in real life without putting myself in grave danger. Here is a list I came up with of a few games that have just come out or are soon to be released of the best genre in gaming.
10. Anthem
Anthem Gameplay Reveal Trailer - Bioware's Destiny Game Xbox One X Gameplay
Anthem is a third-person shooter online multiplayer RPG set on alien planet of the same name. Take control of superhuman exosuits called Javelins to explore a hostile environment filled with beasts and marauders.
The words “Ironman simulator” come to mind after watching the trailer for this game. I got chills when the player locked on to 10 different enemies and gave them a blanket of fire. It even has the classic “I’m that cool” three-point superhero landing.
Javelins are customizable and come in types such as the balanced Ranger or the hulking Colossus. Play with up to four friends in a shared everchanging open world.
Customize your Javelin: Tony Stark would be proud.
Changing Environment: Behold the mighty world altering Shaper Storm.
9. Vampyr
Cry Plays: Vampyr [P1]
Vampyr is a third-person action RPG that takes place in London during the Spanish flu outbreak. You play as Jonathan Reid, a doctor struggling with a new-found lust for blood.
This game truly presents you with the option of choice that other games boast but never really get right. You can feed on others and become more powerful or maintain your cover as a doctor and get a special ending for not killing. Either path you chose will be accompanied with an unsettling soundtrack and atmosphere.
Save or destroy 4 highly detailed London districts. Feed on human blood and gain access to a number of active and passive vampiric powers.
Maintain your identity: Wouldn’t want to attract attention.
The future of London depends on you: Stay a man or become a monster.
8. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
Let’s Play Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire Gameplay PC Walkthrough Part 2
Pillars of Eternity 2 is an isometric RPG on a series of islands in the world of Eora. As a Watcher you must use your ability to see and speak with souls to find out what the god of life and rebirth is up to.
Pillars of Eternity is one of the closest experiences you get to Dungeons and Dragons without pulling out your D20. The combat almost looks like Diablo but leaves you with much more time to strategize. Someone clearly put a lot of time in to this game.
Choices made and followers earned in the previous game can be carried over. Set sail in to a huge open world full of mystical beasts, pirates, and islands to explore.
Use strategy to overcome challenges: They give you a pause button so might as well use it.
Sail where ever you please: Watch out for random events along the way.
7. Greedfall
GreedFall - Reveal Teaser
Greedfall is the name of an upcoming fantasy action RPG set on an island paradise of Elves. Invading Colonial forces have discovered this island and you must choose a side in the coming war.
Instead of the usual middle ages fantasy, Greedfall is a 17th century fantasy complete with muzzle loaders and tri cornered hats. I’ll probably side with the guys who have the 50-foot moose though.
Choices you make through your story will inspire loyalty or betrayal in allies. Sneak, fight, or negotiate your way to success.
A hostile new world: The native wildlife might have a change plans for the colonists.
An inhabited new world: As well as the native population.
6. Wasteland 3
Wasteland 3 - A Frosty Reception
Wasteland 3 is the same top down turn-based RPG as always now in a frozen postapocalyptic Colorado. You play as the last surviving member of a Desert Ranger team far from home.
Turn-based combat is one of my favorite styles but it’s very rare in western games. I am so excited to see another game with modern graphics that picks up where Interplay’s Fallout left off.
Now you can take on the wasteland with a friend in multiplayer. Manage a Ranger base to build a reputation across Colorado.
Survive the frozen wastes: Watch out for cannibal gangs.
New environments: Finally, a postapocalyptic game that doesn’t take place in an arid desert.
5. Dauntless
The Hunt Begins | Let's Play Dauntless Open Beta Ep 1 (Intro & Tutorial Gameplay)
Dauntless is a free-to-play action RPG in a fantasy world full of man-eating Behemoths. You play as a Slayer and it is your job to take down a wide variety of monsters and save humanity.
If you’re a Monster Hunter fan this game is made specifically for you. If you’re not a Monster Hunter fan you can’t beat the low low price of free to try it out.
Use pieces of slain Behemoths to Craft new weapons. There are 26 different Behemoths to hunt with more to come with the full release.
Fight solo: If you’re up for it.
Fight together: Coordinate with up to 4 other players.
4. Griftlands
Griftlands - Reveal E3 2017 Trailer HD
Griftlands is an upcoming turn-based RPG set in a sci-fi world of privateers. The goal of this pirate sandbox is to build a reputation among your peers and make a fortune in the process.
I really liked Don’t Starve and this game is shaping up to be more of the same. If the Stick of Truth style combat in the trailer is any indication, this might be where I spend too much of my time.
Play in a never the same twice procedurally generated world. Capture instead of kill to earn better reputation and profit.
Forge partnerships: Someone’s got to watch you back out there.
Everything is negotiable: Even morality.
3. Dark Souls Remastered
Dark Souls Remastered Gameplay (PS4 Pro): Let's Play Dark Souls Remastered
Dark Souls Remastered is a graphical and mechanical update to the original third-person action RPG. Cursed to continually resurrect upon death you must explore a violent realm to help end or preserve the Age of Fire.
Visual effects seem to be the biggest overhaul compared to the original. Everything generally looks less blurry as well. I’m not so sure about Steam but this game is a significant improvement on console.
Many gameplay bugs and glitches have been fixed from the original. Player count and PvP have been updated to closer match Dark Souls 3 quality.
Very few gameplay changes: The same old Dark Souls.
Very few changes at all: A minor graphical facelift.
2. Code Vein
Code Vein Preview - Let's Play
Code Vein is a third-person action RPG that takes place in a postapocalyptic future inhabited by ravenous ghouls called the Lost. You have been given the power to survive in this world at the costly price of your memory and humanity.
This game looks and plays better than its source material. The anime style also does great for setting it apart from the many others of its kind. It has all of the challenging combat of Dark Souls offers with all the charm of a JRPG.
Choose from a wide assortment of weapons from massive swords to long range rifles. Find over 7 AI companions with unique powers to team up or feed off of.
A little bit like a JRPG: Ridiculously oversized weapons.
A lot a bit like an anime: Ridiculously oversized everything.
1. The Surge 2
The Surge 2 - First Gameplay Footage
The Surge 2 is a third-person action RPG set in a dystopian future exhausted of natural resources. Slash your way through armies of robotic foes with the help of a cybernetic exoskeleton to find out how to save your dying world.
This is the case of another Dark Souls like game that does it better. This one allows you to target specific body parts to remove or disable. It also features finishing moves that slow down time for you to really take in that robo gore.
Fortify your exoskeleton with a plethora of modular upgrades. Major improvements to enemy AI provide a more challenging experience than the first installment.
Interesting theme: Explore the ruins of a slowly dying planet.
Tough combat: Fight bosses that make HAL 9000 look like a broken toaster.
