10. Highlander Mage

Image
Body Image

Highlander mage first emerged from the Saviours of Uldum expansion. This deck has no duplicate cards, which allows it to activate the effects of powerful cards such as Zephrys the Great, and Reno the Relicologist

What’s good about this deck:

  • It is one of the most interesting decks in the meta, because of the fact that it has a high learning curve
  • It has many strong legendary cards with very unique effects
  • It has lots of tech options to help it adapt to the current meta

How to play this deck effectively:

  • When playing against aggressive decks, mulligan for your early-game removal and cheap taunts. In these match-ups, Doomsayer, Overconfident Orc and Zephrys the Great can help you survive the early game, which is what you struggle the most with
  • Try to stabilize the board in the mid-game using your board clears and Reno the Relicologist
  • Be careful when deciding whether to play Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron. Although it can be incredibly fun to watch and generate you a lot of value, if you are unlucky you might lose the game because of it. I suggest you only use it when you have no other option
  • When playing against control decks, mulligan for Escaped Manasaber, Twilight Drake and your highlander cards. Value is very important in those match-ups, so use your cards efficiently
  • Beware of effects that can shuffle cards in your deck, such as Bad Luck Albatross. It will disrupt your highlander effects and you won’t be able to use them until you draw the duplicate cards from your deck

Cards used in this deck:

  • # 1x (1) Arcane Breath
  • # 1x (1) Ray of Frost

Highlander Rogue is another singleton deck that uses no duplicate cards. Along with the highlander cards, it runs a Galakrond Package with 4 invoke cards in total.

What’s good about this deck:

  • It can generate a lot of value through Shadowjeweler Hanar and Galakrond, the Nightmare
  • Because of the fact that it uses 30 different cards, games can be very diverse and you won’t get tired of playing this deck

How to play this deck effectively:

  • Aggro Demon Hunter is your worst match-up. When playing against it, mulligan for Backstab, Edwin VanCleef, EVIL Miscreant and be careful with how much damage you take when attacking with your hero
  • Just like any other highlander deck, cards like Bad Luck Albatross can screw you over. Be careful when using your highlander cards and you have cards shuffled in your deck
  • A big Edwin VanCleef can be very hard to remove for some decks such as Token Druid and Aggro Demon Hunter. Try to use this to your advantage
  • Playing Heistbaron Togwaggle as early as possible can be very rewarding. If you can play him on turn 6, try to stick a Lackey on the board on turn 5
