What Are The Best Games Like God of War?

God of War (2018) is a semi-open world action-adventure game that took the Spartan Kratos out of Greece and gave him a new pantheon to obliterate; this time the Norse gods. The game served as a soft reboot of the series by changing the setting and adding a new dimension to Kratos by giving him a son.

God of War is a special game, but what made it special? The setting? The combat? The tone?

Yes.

The following 11 PC games share similarities with God of War, and here is why they are worth checking out.

11. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Gameplay

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure game developed by FromSoftware (The studio behind Dark Souls). The game takes place in a fantastical version of 16th century Japan where you control a Shinobi out for vengeance. Like God of War, the action is brutal, and the game takes inspiration from both history and myth.

Both games also contain big snakes!

Like Kratos God of War, Hellblade’s main character Senua must delve deep into Norse mythology to fulfill her mission. Senua also suffers from Psychosis, which is a core element of her story and struggle. While the gameplay might not be as refined as God of War, its story may be even better. That’s what the voices in Senua’s head are telling her at least. The sound design in this game is incredible, and it is recommended to play it with headphones, that way the voices can sound like they are in your own head.

9. Darksiders III

Darksiders III Gameplay

Darksiders III is a hack and slash action-adventure game. Like the other two Darksiders games, you play as one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, Fury. It was fun to play as War in the first game and Death in the second, Fury is just as kickass. Like the announcement of God of War (2018) many were surprised and ecstatic at the announcement of Darksiders III, as they though both franchises may have been dead. The original studio that made the first two Darksiders games, Vigil, had gone under. Thankfully the project was taken up by Gunfire Games and they hired much of the staff that had worked on the first two games to make the third one.

The Witcher III Gameplay

The Witcher III is an open world, dark fantasy RPG. It has excellent real-time combat and tells an incredibly engaging narrative.  The Witcher III takes place in a dark world and has a deep and well-told story. Geralt of Rivia is a compelling character as are Ciri, Yeneffer, and Triss. And for anyone who missed Kratos’s more explicit activities from earlier God of War games, Geralt has you covered! This huge open world is one of the most detailed and immersive game worlds out there.

6. Bayonetta

Bayonetta Gameplay

Bayonetta is a frenetic over the top action game. The game knows it is over the top and revels in its own ridiculousness.  If you loved the crazy combated of the original God of War games, Bayonetta will be right up your alley! The action is frenetic, and Bayonetta’s “Witch Time” is comparable to Kratos’s Spartan Rage. The combat of both games is almost like a dance, but at the end all your partners are dead. Bayonetta also has you covered on the awesome huge boss fight front. Small Caveat: if you want to play the equally awesome Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3, you need to invest in a Nintendo Switch.

5. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Gameplay

This action hack and slash game puts you in the shoes of Raiden. Unlike other MGS games where the game pace is much slower, this game is all about crazy action and cool pulling off cool moves. Perhaps it should not be too surprising that Bayonetta developer, Platinum Games was tapped for the game. And like God of War showing us a whole new side to a well-established character like Kratos, Revengence took it one step further and made Raiden, a character that was never a fan favorite and turned him into an awesome badass!

If you are curious how that version of the game would have felt, AC: Origins has got you covered. Ubisoft has the open world stuff down and here we get a chance to play in a whole new sandbox (…sorry bad pun…). Origins, like God of War, has a compelling world just begging to be explored.

1. Ryse: Son of Rome

Ryse: Son of Rome Gameplay

Ryse: Son of Rome is an action-adventure hack and slash game set in ancient Rome. It tells a compelling revenge story and though it came out in 2013, it still looks amazing today. The cinematic detail and the narrative rival that of God of War. That being said, the combat is not as complex or layered as that of God of War. Yet, Ryse: Son of Rome does an excellent job of transporting you to ancient Rome and telling an engaging cinematic and satisfying story.
