What does 4X stand for? It stands for Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate. I didn’t even know what that stood for before I even started writing this article - so pretty much, games like Stellaris, Age of Wonders III, Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville, etc.

So yeah. We’re gonna talk about games in which you can expand your territory, steal or gather resources and kill everything you see(or not). These sort of games are usually sandbox-y and fun to play - let’s get started!

15. Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI

14. Stellaris

13. HUMANKIND™

12. Total War: ROME REMASTERED

Create your legions of highly-skilled warriors, play 38 factions of your choosing and enjoy the epic battles with vastly improved visuals!

11. Sins of a Solar Empire®: Rebellion

10. Age of Wonders III

9. ENDLESS™ Space 2

8. ENDLESS™ Legend

The game’s replayability is off the charts thanks to the game’s constantly randomly-generating world. You can also create your own world!

7. Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War

6. Galactic Civilizations III

The game also lets you customize your ship, gather resources, and find new tech that improves the state of your cute empire. The game is currently on sale on Steam - worth the price!

5. Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville

4. Dominions 5 - Warriors of the Faith

3. Warlock - Master of the Arcane

The game offers large-scale battles on open fields, so put your faith into whatever you believe in and become a magical superpower!

2. AI War 2

1. Star Ruler

Create your own race, get familiar with the interface, and spend countless hours on this difficult game. For a game from 2010, it has a pretty challenging AI - due to the game’s steep learning curve, you don’t have to worry about getting bored. Try this OG game out!
