5 Best New Horror Games for PC in 2015
The horror genre has grown and is quickly becoming a favorite among many as the industry evolves. Some of the most popular games include the Amnesia series, Alone in the Dark, and a variety of Slenderman titles. The games terrify us and make it hard to sleep at night… But we keep coming back for more. It is like an abusive relationship. We all have that morbid curiosity deep inside that just needs to see what lies around the dark corner.
This list of new horror games focuses not only on currently released titles, but also some new and exciting horror games that are looking to be released this year. Here is the list, top 5 new horror games of 2015:
5. Dying LightImage
Hit the zombie with a pipe, I'm sure it wont get angry.
Dying Light is number 5 on the list because while it certainly has a lot of horror aspects and some rather terrifying portions of the game (stupid zombie child screamer) , the game was still mainly an action adventure parkour game. Dying light was the result of Mirrors Edge and any zombie game you’ve ever thought of thrown in a blender, and the result was fantastic.
The game provides endless hours of fun and almost countless side quests. Every time I wanted to continue the story a new and interesting quest popped up that I had to take care of. The scarier portions of this game include being trapped outside at night, getting caught in fast paced zombie chases, being trapped in small confined spaces with hordes of zombies that don’t know that you’re there, and a good number of cheap jump scares.
All in all Dying Light received very positive reviews and has a large player base. If you like parkour games and enjoy drop kicking zombies off of buildings then this game is for you.
4. H1Z1Image
There is nothing left of the world before the apocalypse happened.
H1Z1 came out as a survival MMO and is increasing in popularity. What adds the strong horror feel to this game is the fact that you start out with absolutely nothing. As you develop your crafting skills and figure out how to play the game lots of the scarier elements are lost and it becomes more of a fun multiplayer zombie sandbox. However, as a new beginner jumping into the game you feel terrifyingly helpless.
I remember attracting not only some zombies but also some crazy wildlife that wanted to eat me. A rule of thumb in this game is that if it moves, it wants to eat you. I was able to find shelter in a small house by the side of the road but could only find a can of beans to defend myself with. Thank you Sony!
The game has been riddled with bugs since it is still in Early Access, but it has still managed to receive very positive feedback from reviewers. It is a new unique take at the zombie survival genre and is definitely worth a look.
3. DoomImage
The big monster we see in Doom's trailer.
The 4th installment in the Doom series has been announced but unfortunately not given a release date yet. Many of the horror fans that have played the games through the years remember the intense fast-pace Doom games. Given, that with the graphics and gameplay of the old games, they probably wouldn’t hold up very well today.
The game franchise does carry a heavy name though and will most likely draw a large number of loyal fans back for number 4. The series has consisted of dark themed settings and played as first person shooters. You take control of a ridiculously tough marine that blows hordes of demons and undead to shreds with your overpowered weapons. Hopefully the themes of the first games carry through to this sequel. Massively powerful guns that can blow demons into soup are just what most horror games need.
2. SOMA
“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” –Philip K. Dick
Soma is an upcoming sci-fi horror game produced from Frictional Games. They are the same company that created the Amnesia series so this is bound to be good. The game is set for a release within the early part of 2015 so it should be coming out soon. Not much is known about this game other than that it has something to do with machines becoming more human like and aliens showing up.
SOMA’s official website says that the world has become a nightmare and that doing something unimaginable is the only way out. The gallery of screenshots and the trailer show dark underwater sequences with an incredibly lonely and deserted feeling. The gameplay trailer features solid voice acting, amazing graphical content, and a horror setting that definitely delivers. It does not appear to be action packed like Doom, but more like a puzzle solver like many other horror games on the market.
1. DollhouseImage
Beware says the wall... I think I would leave.
If the name isn’t creepy enough the game trailer certainly delivers. Dollhouse is a new horror game with a very unique take that supposedly allows for a lot of replay ability. Unfortunately a lot of horror games lose their charm once you’ve finished them once because the cheap jump scares don’t get you anymore. Dollhouse is very different in the way that the game is randomly generated every time you play. That means that the player gets to develop their own story and to figure out what is happening alone. There is supposedly an invisible entity that stalks the character throughout the various levels. You can look through the entities eyes, but if you do so you reveal your position.
The trailer looked fantastic and I am very excited for this game. It is currently in early access on steam so head over there and check out the progress it has been making. On top of all of the great features the game provides, it also allows for multiplayer experiences which in my book makes the game infinitely better.
This concludes the list of the top 5 new horror games that has come out or will come out in 2015. Do you agree with our list? What horror games have left you sleepless at night? Let us know what you think in the comments!
