Virtual Reality is probably the best way to experience the horror genre. One of the most important characteristics a horror game has to show is its immersion and VR greatly helps with that. And what’s better than playing a highly immersive horror game? Playing a highly immersive horror game with friends!
5. Reiko’s Fragments
Reiko’s Fragments is a weird game. It’s not a multiplayer game like we’ve come to expect. You play a single-player experience as you explore a haunted house or a haunted shrine and look for a key. You have to avoid the vengeful ghost that’s roaming around the map. The ghost is blind but has a very good sense of hearing which is the main way you interact with it as you escape.
The game is considered multiplayer because while you’re playing the game on VR, your friends can join your session and control the surroundings. They can do all sorts of stuff like controlling the dolls that are a big part of the game’s premise or make the lights flicker on command. This is a genius idea since your friends will probably know how to scare you best and can control the pace of the game you’re playing.
4.SURV1V3
SURV1V3 is a zombie-shooter game made by a small indie team. Surprisingly, the game can stand its ground with the other games that were developed with bigger and more experienced teams.
The game offers a realistic open-world experience. You can go around shooting zombies alone or invite your friends to join you. The cool part is, that the game lets you choose if you’re going to play co-op and try to survive for as long as possible with your friends or have an all-out battle royale shoot-out amid the apocalypse.
All-in-all the game is well polished and very fun. It’s certainly one of the best zombie-shooters VR can offer. It’s not the most popular game, but if you can get a couple of friends to play it with you, you won’t regret purchasing it.
3. The Forest
The forest is an incredibly beautiful survival game. You spend the majority of the game collecting resources to survive and build your shelter. However, you will frequently be forced to fight the forest's monstrosities. There are several tribes of these mutants, and their artificial intelligence is amazing. They'll act differently depending on how many there are, what time of day it is, and where you come across them. They'll even track you down to see where your base is.
You can play with up to 7 of your friends. The co-op option reduces the game's dread factor, but it also allows for more coordinated strategies and more fascinating base development. You and your friends can use the extra hands you’ve got to build a big fort and defend from the cannibals. It makes the game less scary but it’s a great experience.
Virtual Reality adds to the immersion of the game. The already immersive experience of survival horror games is one of The Forest’s big strengths. You have to always worry about your resources and the scary maniacs in the forest and VR just adds to that enjoyment.
2. GTFO
GTFO is a first-person shooter horror game in which working together with your friends is a must if you want to complete it. GTFO prides itself on its difficulty, requiring not just you, but also your teammates to learn smart gear choices and sneaky movement across the freaky research facility.
GTFO can be played with fewer than four players; the game will introduce bots to fill in the gaps, however, this is not encouraged due to the lack of communication that happens.
This game doesn’t have a VR release yet, but there’s a mod that lets you play in VR. You should be mindful of others you play with and learn the game properly first since you wouldn’t want to be the weak link in your team due to you running around cluelessly with a VR headset.
1. Phasmophobia
In the multiplayer horror genre, Phasmophobia is a well-known name. It's a fun game where you explore a haunted house with your friends (or other people online) and try to figure out who's the creature that's made its home there. Play as paranormal investigators and visit spooky locations filled with spookier ghosts.
This game works well with virtual reality. The experience of exploring the house becomes more immersive. Because the game's ghosts are spooky, the added focus will make it more compelling to play.
