Total War Attila is one of the most underrated Total Wars in the entire franchise. Encompassing the downfall of Rome to the rise of Christianity, illustrates an epic journey from Barbarian tribes immigrating into the lands of the Empire, to the Huns leading their epic apocalyptic journey that will be remembered for generations.

This is the era of heroic Roman Generals being assassinated by incompetent Western Roman Emperors, and the rise of the Byzantine Empire once Western Rome fell to the Visigoths. Featuring some of the best battle mechanics, it’s a story of a perfect total war setting.

Attila TW offers modifications that completely overhaul it to different periods, even having fantasy mods! Some great mods are Medieval 1212, which could be argued to become a new successor to Medieval III, and Dawnless Days, one of the biggest LOTR mods coming to Total War. We’ll be covering 15 of the best mods that you can download and play.

15) Dawnless Days Total War

Dawnless Days is a comprehensive overhaul of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and will come to Total War Attila with a brand new campaign map, hundreds of new units, and custom-made battle maps resembling that of the Tolkien Universe.

Currently, the campaign is being worked on. Right now, the mod allows you to play multiplayer battles over unique maps such as Helms Deep and Isengard. If you’re a lover of Lord of the Rings, then this mod captures the world of Tolkien beautifully and is a tribute to the film trilogy. Any LOTR nerd and those who are casual will love playing this and recreating the glorious Battles of the Third Age.

Key Features:

  • Adds Custom Made Maps such as Erebor, Helms Deep, and Minas Tirath so that you can play in multiplayer
  • Adds hundreds of new units, sub mods that expand the unit rosters
  • It has a custom-made launcher so that you can download sub-mods with no problems
  • Allows you to play the Third Age in all its glory.

14) Medieval 1212 Total War

Medieval 1212’s epic scope and ambition showcase the conversion of Attila’s time frame to the Medieval setting. With an epic campaign map of an overhauled Europe resembling the Medieval period, you can play with hundreds of factions and tons of scripted events with decisions that allow you to enact rules and laws within your realm.

You can also do the Crusades which allows you to play the campaign in the Holy Land. There’s a ton of historical accuracy with thousands of new units and recently the mod was updated with new generic custom cities that resemble a Medieval feel.

Engage in some of the most epic multiplayer battles in the Medieval Era. This is the reason it's fun. If you ever wondered what a Medieval III Total War would look like, then this is the mod to play it. This is in Medieval III in all its glory.

Key features:

  • Many factions have story events and unique challenges
  • You can use the Pope, playing as a Catholic faction to gain power
  • War weariness encourages shorter and fewer wars
  • Plenty of events illustrate that great plagues, famines, and climate change can all ravage the land throughout your campaign

13) Ancient Empires Total War

Ancient Empires was and is one of the biggest overhauls of the game itself. Inspired by classic mods such as Europa Barboroum, this massive mod transports you into the time of the Roman Republic’s War with Carthage and Hannibal of Barca in 218 BCE.

Immerse yourself into an epic campaign where Carthage is now held at the mercy of Rome, while wary Greek City States and the Successors of Alexander watch with concern. Relive the Battle of Zama playing Hannibal Barca or play Scipio to destroy the epic city of Carthage. This is one of the funniest mods out there.

The mod is going through an updated status, now being called Classical Empires TW. Classical Empires offers an updated, fixed version of the mod with multiple patches.

Features:

  • 148 factions to choose from in campaign and custom battle
  • 45 playable factions in the campaign
  • Most historically accurate setting in the Ancient World
  • Emphasis on strategic choice
  • Huge battle mechanics and overhaul of logistics

12) Medieval 1212 Custom Cities Beta

This mod completely overhauls much of 1212AD’s vanilla cities to resemble actual Medieval European-style cities, including a huge variety of 40+ maps, and variants included. There are over 16 maps that feature Western European houses which are made of white timber. To represent regional diversity, the regions of Eastern Europe and Germany use a mixture of varying colours and red.

There are also a ton of Mediterranean and Slavic maps, and these cities have their variants that in the future, will mean you have different tiers of the same map to fight in your campaign. There’s still a ton to be added, but these will make your Medieval Campaign feel as if you are playing a different game all by itself.

Key features

This is now integrated into the main 1212AD mod. So experience an epic campaign playing in your Medieval environment.

  • Maps are upgradeable
  • Siege escalation is available
  • City Lights/Ambient smoke effects.

10) Natural Water

Natural Water mod is something I wish to see more of in terms of the Total War series. Though it is a visual mod and does not impact much with gameplay, it provides a nice visual aesthetic that you might want to do when you’re playing your grand epic strategy campaigns whether it be Medieval 1212 or Ancient Empires. This mod transforms the campaign map in such a way that it feels and provides a historical and gritty outlook.

Key features:

  • Clouds have different colours and impact
  • Water is more natural
  • Compatible with all mods played

9) Terminus Total War

Terminus Total War was a semi-fantasy mod that combined elements of late antiquity and classical antiquity to create a grand epic campaign with hundreds of factions, new units and overhauled gameplay mechanics.

This mod was re-uploaded and is now one of the best mods to play for Attila. It has Medieval Teutons, an Egyptian Empire, the Britannic Kingdom and much more. Considered one of the best mods in Attila and praised by many YouTubers, you will not regret playing this.

Key Features:

  • New Battle Mechanics
  • Interesting Alternate History Scenarios
  • Semi-fantasy armies with a historical Flair
  • Looks great with the Natural Water Mod

8) 642 Dark Ages

This mod is set during the rise of the Arabian Empire at the onset after the Persians and the Romans fought each other in the most gruelling war. As a result, the Arabian Empire is now starting to emerge. You can change history in a setting that is rarely explored.

This is a mod focusing on the later stages of Attila’s era and would be described as a DLC but Creative Assembly never expanded upon this rich time frame. There are plenty of submods to play with, and there is a list of optional submods. It's a historical mode that showcases what Attila needed in the first place.

Key features:

  • Play in a historical setting showcasing the downfall of the Byzantine and Persian Empires
  • Play with hundreds of new rosters, units and new events
  • Play in a historically accurate and authentic setting.

6) Age of Justinian 555 AD

The age of Justinian puts you in the time of the declining Emperor, the famed Justinian of Byzantium. Under his reign, he has almost restored parts of the old Roman Empire, and driven out the fierce Ostrogoths from Italy. Rebellions occur and the Empire buckles under the weight of its upkeep for its troops.

The forces of Rome are stretched out, and war with the Visigoths in Spain means new enemies now gathered. But can you reverse Rome’s fortune? Can you make Rome the Empire it once was? That’s what’s fun about this mod and this alternate historical mod is going to transform your epic Byzantine Campaign.

Key features:

  • Historically accurate Roman Armies, hundreds of changes to new units to reflect the period
  • New historical starting positions with new events
  • New battle mechanics

5) Fall of the Eagles

This is another overhaul of TW Attila, which focuses on the historical authenticity of the gameplay and new battle mechanics, with new unit overhauls. This mod is focused on the historical accuracy of 395 AD, focusing on keeping units more accurate to their timeframe. The Sassanids get a huge unit roster overhaul, and although there’s a lot more emphasis on realism, this mod is fantastic for those who want historically accurate campaigns.

Key features:

  • Realistic Battles
  • Longer battles
  • Army integrity is harder to maintain

4) Fireforged Empire

This mod transformed Attila into the Late Roman Period before things got worse for the Western Roman Empire. In this mode, experience the epic struggles of Rome as it faces Barbarian hordes running away from the Huns. Witness the struggle of the powerful Western Roman Empire to handle this crisis, and witness the birth of a new powerful Eastern Roman Empire that will be called Byzantium one day. Featuring 100s of new units, new campaign mechanics and battle changes, this mod is the best out there.

  • Historically scripted mechanics
  • Historically accurate units
  • New Battle Mechanics
  • New Graphics

3) Anno Dominoi

If you’re a fan of the Viking period, then the 919 AD Age of Charlemagne mod is a brilliant setting for playing this campaign. By the 10th century, the Magyars invaded Germany and East Europe. And you have Viking Raids in Britain and France. Spain is also clashing between Visigoth and the Moors. This was a turbulent period in the Dark Ages of Europe. This overhauls everything in the Age of Charlemagne DLC Campaign. Can you change the history of Early Christianity? That is why this campaign is so fun.

Key features:

  • New Historical Campaign
  • New events and missions
  • New Historical Characters
  • New custom lighting
  • New meticulously historically accurate clothing/armour

2) Immersive Campaign: Roman Cities Restoration + Renovated Roman Cities

These two mods transform Attila back to its predecessor, Rome II. It achieves this by changing the look of the cities on the campaign map and the battle maps themselves. It restores the cities to have a ‘Roman’ feel.

The modders have done a lot of work in overhauling the cities to make sure that when you’re fighting in the downfall of Rome, you’re fighting in the era of what made Roman architecture so glorious. Cities of shining marble and red-marbled houses are what made Rome great. These mods are essential if you want to replay the glory of Rome itself.

Key features:

  • Overhaul of vanilla cities on the campaign map
  • Overhaul of city models
  • Overhaul of battle maps

This is a great overhaul of the Last Roman Campaign DLC. It brings new units, new events, missions and a completely reworked campaign to suit Belsiarius and his expedition. There are new maps and new unit rosters. It is a must-play for historical fans and is fun to have a historically accurate experience of one of the greatest historical expeditions in Roman History.

  • New Battle Balance
  • New Unit Concept
  • New Unit reskins
