What are Hitboxes?

In Rocket League, hitboxes refer to the invisible, three-dimensional shape that encompasses each car in the game. These hitboxes determine the physical dimensions of the car and are crucial for accurate collisions, and ball hits.

Hitboxes play a significant role in how players control their cars, make contact with the ball, and interact with other cars on the field. Rocket League has several different car bodies, and each body has its unique hitbox.

Which cars have the best Hitboxes?

  • Octane Hitbox: The Octane is one of the most popular and widely used cars in Rocket League. Its hitbox is often considered a standard or reference hitbox for the game.
  • Dominus Hitbox: Another commonly used hitbox, the Dominus is known for its longer and flatter shape compared to the Octane.
  • Plank Hitbox: This hitbox type is characterized by its flat and elongated shape, providing a different feel compared to the more rounded hitboxes.
  • Breakout Hitbox: The Breakout hitbox is somewhat similar to the Dominus but with its unique characteristics, mainly that it has a flatter shape.
  • Hybrid Hitbox: Some cars have hitboxes that are a mix or hybrid of the above types, combining their elements to create a middle ground between them.

Below are some stats for the most commonly used cars in the game:

  • Preset
  • Length (uu)
  • Width (uu)
  • Height (uu)
  • Angle (degree)
  • Octane- 118.01, 84.20, 36.16, -0.55
  • Dominus- 127.93, 83.28, 31.30, -0.96

1. Octane: (Tall and chubby - The Default Pro hitbox/car)

The Octane is undoubtedly the best and most popular body in the game, it is still used by the pro Rocket League players. It has an ideal hitbox that is both tall and chubby (wide), so you should have no problem connecting with the ball both in the air and on the ground.

The Octane body is considered the standard, default, and go-to body to use for both beginners and advanced players, and you should give it a go! There are also some awesome styles and decals for this body to check out.

If you want to use the Octane hitbox but don’t love the car shape, look for variants such as the Backfire and Honda Civic Type-R!

2. Fennec (Same as Octane)

So you love the Octane hitbox but not the car shape? The Fennec is for you! This car's body shares the same hitbox as the Octane but with a slightly cooler body shape, that arguably looks cooler.

The Fennec has a more early 2000’s sports hatchback design (like a BMW Z3). Whether you go with the Octane or Fennec, you can be sure you are using the same car as the pros!

3. Dominus (Longer and Flatter)

Here is another perfect car to use, that is also used by a lot of pros. This is a longer and flatter design compared to the Octane, and although it doesn't have as good of a turning circle, it makes up for it with its flipping and air-juggling prowess.

The Dominus is more likely to lose 50:50 fights due to its lack of height compared to the octane hitbox, but it is still a contender as its length can allow for flashy plays, especially from the above.

There are too many awesome variants of the Dominus design, including 007’s Aston Martin, the DeLorean Time Machine, and the BMW M240i!

4. Scarab (Octane Hitbox)

The Scarab is another car that uses, you guessed it, the Octane hitbox The Scarab has a unique, circular, almost UFO-like shape, resembling a beetle. Its design makes it stand out on the field, and its unconventional appearance appeals to players looking for something different.

However, because the Scarab doesn't fit the hitbox shape as well as the Octane or the Fennec, it is not as good a choice overall. Stick with the Octane or the Fennec if you have one, as they will serve you better on the pitch.

5. Breakout (Long and Thin)

Being so narrow and fat makes it slightly harder to hit the ball accurately compared to using the Octane and Dominus. The Cyclone and Animus are popular variants of the Breakout hitbox/design.

6. Plank

The plank type is even thinner than (lower to the ground) than the Dominus or the Breakout! This makes it hard to win 1 on 1’s in all game modes, but its sharp corners and edges do make it easy to pull off trick shots and air-juggles.

Like all hitbox types in the game, there are several freakin’ awesome variants of this car design. Commonly used plank-type cars include the Paladin, Sentinel, Batmobile, Artemis, and

7. Hybrid

The Hybrid Hitbox provides an ideal balance between the nimbleness and quickness of the Octane and the sheer raw dominating power of the Dominus. Though it isn’t used by that many pros, it is a good choice overall and worth a few laps of the pitch to try out.

Some of the Hybrid variants are harder to obtain, but many players have the Esper or X-Devil car types in their inventory if they have been playing for many hours (or months, or years!).

8. Merc

The Merc is a big chunky bloke from the pub. This car will help you see goals (perhaps) but its big shortfall is that it is also fat and heavy and slow compared to most other cars. Use it at your peril!

9. Backfire

The backfire is an old favorite, literally! This car shares the Octane and Fennec hitbox (among many others) but is unique because of its old-timey look, reminiscent of the car used by Cruella Deville in the 101 Dalmatians movie!

This car looks the best with the flames decal in red and yellow or orange. Do you have a better design?

10. Nascar

For all the American Rocket League players (and any other Nascar fans, e.g. Americans) we have the Nascar-themed cars. You may recognise the long thin shape and that is because these cars use the Dominus hitbox.

They are freakin’ awesome-looking Rocket League cars that have real-game use if you want to be competitive (they are meta), so you can chuck on a Nascar skin and still win games while showing your love for Nascar!
