Here's the thing the Avatars in Magic the Gathering Arena are just there to give you some customization to your load screen and field while you play.
Seeing as they hold no strategic value in-game and all of them cost the same price of either 500 gems, 3,000 gold, or 3,000 gems if you get the bundles. I will be ranking them based on their artwork, the audio work put into it, and of course my personal preferences.
That said, This list is my of my personal opinion and therefore is not meant to be taken as an end-all beat-all list.
With that said let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this list, shall we?
26. Fblthp
Fblthp is a cowardly homunculus from Ravnica with a talent for getting hopelessly lost, he's been used as bait, has found himself on top of statues and lost in the Juri Revue. He’s also seen as a hero to many homunculi as noted by the fact that his descendants may petition the Azorius Senate to create a tablet to register Fblthp's exploits upon his death. In reality, he really just wants to take care of the plants in the Magister’s Gardens and keep the place clean
Why Fblthp is Below Average
- He is the only Avatar not available for direct purchase
- There seems to be a stigma on the forums against people who use him as their Avatar even some Youtuber and Streamers seem to follow this stigma
- People who use him are often described as “being able to afford the cards in the decks but not knowing how to use them”
- His artwork is pretty awesome seeming to look like it can almost jump off the screen
Ok now on to the ones that you can actually get in-game
25. Lazav
Lazav is the current guild master of House Dimir on the plane of Ravnica. His cloak made of an ancient and extinct race of beasts seems to cause his visage to constantly shift and change. Little is known about but they say he draws all mana in surroundings to him.
Why Lazav is a Legendary
- The artwork is amazing and he looks like Mather Mercer of Critical Role fame and voice actor
- Is voiced oddly enough by Crispin Freeman (Winston from Overwatch, and the Wizard in Diablo 3) and not Mathew Mercer
- Has very rich and varied lore being mentioned or quoted in many of their flavor texts
- A great choice for anyone who plays Blue/Black and you won't be as obvious as some of the other Avatars as to what you’re playing
- Some of the best voice lines in the game “You’re going to have to trust me.”
24. Rakdos
Rakdos embodies hedonism and is known for his capricious cruelty and megalomania. Older than the Guildpact itself, Rakdos is an ancient, powerful, and evil demon who personifies the chaotic fury of red mana and the death and defilement of black. Described as "Big as a dragon, with arms and legs muscled and proportioned like a gigantic wrestler. Two sets of horns, one arcing upward, outward, and backward like a steer's, the other arcing down and curving up like those of a humongous ram.
Burning yellow eyes. Razor teeth, locked together in a rictus grin. A beard of bone spurs emerging from a wide jaw. Bat wings. Cloven hooves. Blood-red hide clothed in chains and skulls. And his brow, a wreath of flame."
Rakdos is the picture of a dominating performer and is, to many, the visage of power.
Why Rakdos is Legendary
- An actual freaking demon, four horns, a crown of fire, and a scythe he is one of the edgiest Avatars to date
- Just wants to “light a fire in your belly.” and “paint the town red.”
- Demons just wanna have fun, that’s all they really want
- Many people will assume you are playing Red/Black so switch it up, or better yet, give them a show they will never forget
- The voice work is amazing I never thought he would be cockney but it fits better than I expected
23. Vannifar
The guild master of the Simic Combine, Vannifar is an elf who mutated her body into an ooze like state. She is the leader of a particular group within the Simic Combine who believe war is coming and that in order to survive they must evolve and adapt or they will be annihilated.
Why Vannifar is Epic
- Great artwork clean lines even the slime-like appendage behind her and her arms are well detailed
- Simic combine is one of my favorite guilds second only to the Selesnya Conclave so that's awesome
- Adapt is a fun mechanic and she used it on herself
- The voice acting is really nice i and I like the way she draws out her S’s
22. Ral Zarek
Brilliant, daring, and unpredictable this Izzet League Guildmaster is focused on red and blue mana. He is known to have tamed storms, harnessed lightning, controlled rain, flown on the wind and can even charge himself with ambient static electricity.
Why Ral Zarek is Epic
- The art is amazing nice sharp lines great color scheme, the way the electricity looks to dance across his hands, you know in for some trouble when you go against an Izzet league guild member
- He some of my favorite voice lines in the game “I’ve flown on gale-force winds, beating you will be a breeze.”
- Looks like Rob Lowe
- Playing with him as your Avatar may give away a Red/ Blue player
21. Trostani
The Selesnya Conclave Guildmage, these three dryads have fused together representing life, order, and harmony. They speak for the world tree and uphold Selesnya’s key tenets. The first is Oba, the dryad of Life, was wild and full of life her hair was tangled with leaves and vines.
Secondly is Ses, the dryad of Order, was ordered in manner and speech, Her hair was held in place by a headpiece made of golden wood. And finally, we have Cim, the dryad of Harmony, was the eldest and the bridge between the other two sisters. Like nature itself, these three can be calm and serene, or great and terrible.
Why Trostani is Epic because (bullet points)
- The art is pretty good, I like that the clothing they wear is from the wood they are formed out of
- They may very well have more voice lines than any other Avatar in the game, but the fact that there is only one voice for three separate beings is kind of odd
- Selesnya Conclave that means they may very well guess that you are playing Green/ White
20. Gideon Jura
Born Kytheon Iora was a Hieromancer and member of the Gatewatch an Extraplanar group made up of some of the greatest planeswalkers known to the multiverse. He was a central figure in many battles and stories throughout the multiverse. However, he died saving Liliana Vess’s life during the battle known as the War of the Spark when the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas turned the Demon’s Contract against her. By using his power of Hieromancy Gideon took the contract and its lethal effects upon himself.
Why Gideon Jura is Epic because (bullet points)
- The artwork is pretty good I wish it looked more like the above picture but eh what have you
- Voice work is fantastic and done by voice actor extraordinaire Travis Willingham of Critical Role fame
- Sadly generic good guy number 47, however, he still gets points for being awesome
- Also… I just think Gideon is awesome so he goes in epic anyway
19. Karn
Karn is a time traveler, a silver golem, and a planeswalker. He was created by the mighty artificer Urza and gifted with the ability to know an artifacts' effect just touching it. As if all that wasn't cool enough he can pass an artifacts powers to multiple people at once
Why Karn is Epic (bullet points)
- The artwork looks great it's amazing how much detail they gave an all silver Golem
- Great voice work deep and vibrating
- Also “Until you have lived as a statue do not talk to me of pigeons.” Shale reference plus 10,000 points
- Is a genuinely awesome character
18. Angrath
Minotaur and Pyromancer who focus on red and black mana. He was trapped on ixalan for fourteen years where he was known Captain Angrath. He has two daughters Rumi and Jamira though we don't know the plane he is from. He helped fight Nicol Bolas in the war of the spark. He is known as a simple blacksmith and family man on his home plane.
Why Angrath is Epic
- The artwork is pretty much what you see there without the background, great work just kind of disappointed because there's better art for him
- Probably THE best voice work in the game
- SO THAT’S what an angry Minotaur sounds like sheesh
- One of my favorite lines in the game “ *Laughs* Please run, A chase stokes the forge.”
- Planeswalker, blacksmith, family man I can get behind that
17. Jace Beleren
Oh my god, where to start with Jace Beleren, I’ll be honest I almost put him in mythic.
Jace is a human telemancer from Vryn, He focuses on blue mana. He is a Master of clairvoyance and illusion, but It’s his master of Mind Magic that makes him so powerful. A Member of the Gatewatch he has a troubled conscious due to poor choices in the past. His eyes Shine a vibrant hue of blue whenever he uses magic.
Why Jace Beleren is Epic
- The artwork is nice and floaty exactly what you want from someone whos playing with your mind
- Voice work feels kind of odd, wait maybe that's what they were going for, he does say “Don't worry, this is just an illusion after all.”
- You want to go home and rethink your life
- Big Brain Mind Mage
16. Kaya
Kaya is a dark-skinned, young woman with dark, frizzy hair. She is a confident, roguish duelist with the ability to become partially incorporeal, allowing her to slip through solid items and to touch and assassinate spirits. This has given rise to her nickname of the Ghost-Assassin. She's basically a ghostbuster but much cooler.
Why Kaya is Epic
- Her artwork is great from the smirk on her face to the crisp lines of her cape, fantastic
- Voice Work is brilliance EXACTLY what I think she should like “Didn’t see a door, so I let myself in.”
- “Dispelling phantasms makes me feel good.” is pretty much “Bustin makes me feel good” so you know Ghostbusters reference
15. Ajani Goldmane
Ajani Goldmane is a planeswalker who wields white magic. His specialty is magic of the purification of body and soul: spells that heal and strengthen his allies, and spells that evoke the inner, spiritual essence of others. Ajani Goldmane is a Nacatl, originally native to Naya.
Why Ajani Goldmane is Just Ok
- The artwork is crisp and clean and even the weapon is well detailed
- Voice is nice and deep, just like id imagine, I just wish he had better lines to give us
- Generic good guy
- Albino Lion-o
14. Liliana Vess
Liliana Vess is a human planeswalker from Dominaria who is a master of necromancy. Raven-haired Liliana uses black mana to reanimate the dead, corrupt the living, and unlock power from death. She is charismatic, witty, and attractive, but profoundly egocentric. She cares little for others, seeing them as stepping stones on her path to greater power. It was this craving for power that brought her to the Chain Veil, an item she views with contempt at times, for its power comes at a terrible price.
Why Liliana Vess is Just Ok
- The artwork is good but the magic and her eyes pink is just off putting they are usually depicted as a deep and menacing purple
- She sounds almost exactly like I thought she would, some of her lines are just perfect “I have conquered death, As I will conquer you.”
- I admit I have a thing for goths so she is my “Wifu”
13. Nissa Revane
Recently Nissa was retconned into an animist whose ties to her home plane goes beyond that of a normal shaman or even a druid. Her soul speaks to Zendikar, and the land is as much a part of her as the blood pumping inside her veins. In this view, she is much more tolerant of other races. Originally she was said to have a deep-seated hatred of vampires, a fear of snakes and a love for flowers. She is primarily Green-aligned but secondary in Blue. When creating spells, Nissa's eyes shine bright green, as do the tattoos on her face, with magic.
Why Nissa Revane is Just Ok
- The artwork is lack lust and I feel it would have been better without her pointing her staff in my face
- Her lines are delivered well but they just feel so generic we hear pretty much the same from other avatars who look much better
- Is THE defacto mone Green Mage
- Elf “Wifu Syndrome”
12. Sarkhan Vol
Sarkhan Vol is a planeswalker hailing from Tarkir, a plane scourged by war. He is fascinated by dragons, something that has been a blessing and a curse to him throughout his life. Driven to find a dragon to worship, he was found by Bolas who manipulated that desire to reduce the prideful Planeswalker into a mindless pawn. Seeing the destroyed body of his peer, Tezzeret, and Bolas's own carelessness about those beneath him, He found his spirit broken. He eventually found peace of mind by seeking out Ugin and bringing about the downfall of his old master.
Why Sarkhan Vol is Just Ok
- The artwork is pretty much the picture which is pretty good gets the point across
- Voice is deep and growling, exactly what I picture hed sound like
- Servant of Nicol Bolas so yeah… he has a god pharaoh on his side
11. Teferi
Teferi is an ancient being who has seen many things. He is a chronoarch, a wizard who can manipulate time. He is a philosopher and scientist. He eschews violence and will attempt to deal with opposition via the control of its allies and the eventual removal of its power-base.
Due to this, he is primarily blue-aligned but secondary in white mana. As he planeswalks, he disappears in a blue whirlwind.
Why Teferi is Just Ok
- Awesome art clean lines look like Idris Elba
- Good lines delivered with feeling some are pretty cheesy though
- Dormammu, I have come to bargain
- Big Brain Time Mage
10. Tezzeret
Tezzeret is a planeswalker who wields blue magic. His specialty is artifice: spells that forge artifacts, manipulate artifacts, and bring artifacts to life, creating huge constructs from mere scrap bits of metal. Despite this, the inventor Rashmi judged him incapable of science and invention.
His right arm is a twisted cage of metal struts, ending in fingers like talons. The fingers can be fired off and return automatically.
Why Tezzeret is Just Ok
- His art is ok at best
- His voice work is pretty good
- Really the only thing keeping him being lower is that awesome metal arm
- He was also a slave to Nicol Bolas, and after the War of the Spark Niv-Mizzet decided that fact he Helped Nicol meant he needed to die so he sent Ral Zerak after him
9. Vivien Reid
Vivien was born on Skalla, a plane destroyed by Nicol Bolas. Her mission is to destroy the cancer of civilization and restore the natural order to the Multiverse. Vivien is able to call forth spirit creatures with her Arkbow by firing arrows at her foes.
She is also able to enlarge living animals to enormous sizes. As you might have guessed he Mana type is green.
Why Vivien Reid is Just Ok
- The artwork is very nice from her design to the glowing arrows very cool
- Her voice lines are delivered with power and emotion
- She has her pets in her Avatar picture unlike someone else I'll talk about later
- We feel the same general way about animals and people, animals are fine, people… not so much
- For when you want Nissa without wanting everyone thinking you have a thing for Nisa
8. Chandra Nalaar
Chandra is particularly good with fire and uses it to resolve whatever situation she might be in. She values ingenuity and improvisation with her magic. She mentors under Jaya to learn better control over her pyromancy.
Even though Chandra is proud of her independent nature, she also recognizes the volatile nature of her inner fire.
Why Chandra Nalaar is Just Ok
- Her art is pretty sad I wanted to like it but the whole hand in your face thing is overdone
- Plus side there some real emotion in her voice work but the lines are just generic feeling “I know, I know I'm pretty hot, huh?” really
- Mono red burn is awesome let your enemies know that you plan to turn them into ashes
7. Aurelia
Aurelia is tall but gives an impression of delicate grace that belies her size. Unlike her predecessors, she has only two white-feathered wings. They spread nearly ten feet across. True justice, She argues, isn't merely the enforcement of the letter of existing laws.
But the establishment of equitable and compassionate relationships among all of Ravnica's people. That means protecting the weak from the depredations of the strong, sheltering the innocents who are threatened by war, and ensuring that enforcement of the law doesn't become oppressive. As the current Guildmaster of the Boros Legion, she keeps a close relationship with her guild members.
Why Aurelia is Just Ok
- Her artwork makes her seem like a generic red-haired angel
- Her voice lines lack force behind them
- She is, however, making the symbol of Boros with her hand and that’s cool
6. Huatli
Huatli is a human planeswalker and warrior-poet from Ixalan who rides a dinosaur. She is mostly armored and armed, with a long tightly braided black ponytail emerging from beneath her helm. Driven by her visions of other worlds, she seeks to find Orazca to unlock its power. She has a special connection to her dinosaurs, being able to communicate with them via scent-memories.
Why Hautli is Just Ok
- Her voice lines are pretty good they have some emotions but that's the extent of the good
- The art is bland and tasteless
- She has no pet dinosaur in the Avatar art unlike Vivien
- Would be a thousand times cooler with her dinosaur
5. Jaya Ballard
Jaya Ballard had spent her early years earning her name as a not-so-humble task mage and as an acquaintance of Jodah, the pyromancer witnessed many of the momentous events on Terisiare during the Ice Age. After she became a planeswalker, her mastery of fire magic inspired the practice of many monks and mercenaries on many planes. Nowadays, she is rather thoughtful and controlled, utilizing her flames with a clear head, making her a direct contrast to her current student Chandra Nalaar.
Why Jaya Ballard is Below Average
- The artwork is pretty good I like the particle effect of her fire
- Voice has emotion but the lines… I feel like I heard them somewhere else
- Old lady Chandra that's what she feels like
- What it boils down to here is do you want to play the student or the master they're pretty the same person
4. Garruk, Cursed Huntsman
Garruk is a giant of a man. His height is 8 feet 2 inches (2.5 meters) and his weight is 480 pounds (217 kilograms). His rusty helm usually covers his hair and the top half of his face. A thick fur cloak adorned with yellowing horns covers his shoulders.Garruk's philosophy is to live naturally, being one with nature, aspiring to become a predator.
He is gruff and impatient, uncomfortable in conversation or "civilized settings", and prefers the wilds. He was driven to kill by the curse of the chain veil, leading him to hunt planeswalkers as they were the "prey" he desired. However, after his curse was removed he was free of this mania.
Why Garruk, Cursed Huntsman is Below Average
- I wanted to like this one but he has like three voice lines and they all kind of suck
- This picture and pose has been overused for Garruk since way back when and it has just gotten old
- He’s being controlled by Oko and that’s just sad for the once-great huntsman
- I wish I could put him higher on the list as he is one of my favorite originals
3. Vraska
She is a striking, green-scaled, woman with long, black snake-like hair tendrils. She has narrow features and bright yellow eyes with a petrifying gaze. Her eyes shine golden when she uses her power to turn her victims to stone. To fulfill her ambitions of becoming guild master and restore equality within the Golgari, she aligned herself with Nicol Bolas.
Caring not of her actions, she only began to see that there was still something worth cherishing within life upon being trapped on Ixalan alongside Jace Beleren.
Why Vraska is Below Average
- Her avatar is not as good looking as this picture
- Her voice lines are not great, the voice acting is the lines are just weak
- A lot of people use her Avatar I believe this because of “Wifu Syndrome”
- However, she gets to hunt the next on this list so there's that
2. Dovin Baan
Dovin Baan is tall, thin and always impeccably dressed, who strives for perfection. His suit is partially encased in whorls and filigrees of brass. His favorite tools are Thopters, small flying mechanical spy devices. However, it’s his innate talent, heightened by magic, that allows him to clearly see the flaws in any system or machine. After mere moments of scrutiny, he can provide a complete analysis.
Noting a particular machine's weaknesses, highlighting its shortcomings, and predicting with startling accuracy exactly how and when it will fail.
Why Dovin Baan is Below Average
- The artwork is not great
- Voice work is pretty bad
- He’s totally judging you and has found you to be lacking but so is he soooo
1. Domi Rade
Domri Rade was a chaotic power-hungry individual. Through his desire, Bolas found him an easy target to manipulate for his plans during the War of the Spark. He showed a bit of naivety by thinking Bolas would allow him to join his side, simply because both wanted to destroy Ravnica.
During his demise, he revealed an almost child-like mentality, begging for forgiveness as the dragon ruthlessly stole his spark and cast his empty shell aside. When will people learn not to trust Bolas
Why Domri Rade is Below Average
- Ah yes Domri Rade artwork is uninspired and he looks like he stepped in one of his pets poop
- Voice work is ok I guess, but his lines are pretty stereotypical and his voice is just annoying, I don't blame the voice actor though because it fits the character
- Looks like an extra from Mad Max
- He's so bad I almost didn't want to put him on this list
With that, I hope you enjoyed the trip through the Avatars of Magic the Gathering Arena
