There’s no denying that game companies will expend considerable resources to give us an artistically appealing experience, but how important are graphics to a game?

If you’re considering the overall artistic direction, then it is vital to a game's success. However, if you are referring to how a game runs combined with how it looks or what the top-end graphical settings are, then you begin to see a diminishing return the better the graphics get.

While it would be difficult to create a comprehensive list of the most artistically appealing RPGs, below is an overview of what the industry offers. For this article, we are going to consider both visual appeal as well as music where appropriate.

1. Elden Ring

They set out to dazzle me with their artistic talent. They succeeded!

The dark aesthetic of this action roleplaying game (ARPG) by FromSoftware boasts praise from players and critics alike. Since its release in 2022, it has won more than 300 game awards including The Game Awards Best Art Direction. From the third-person perspective, you will explore an immense open world while trying to repair the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.

Between the art and the music, this souls-like game has a lot to offer. The mix of somber and intense soundtrack supports the gritty storyline. Beautifully crafted landscapes invite you to explore the world while the epically designed bosses remind you of the harsh reality of the world's setting.

Like so many of the games on this list, Elden Ring marries solid gameplay with inspired art direction. For a look at what Elden Ring has to offer, check out this official launch trailer.

2. Monster Hunter: World

A scrumptuous meal made by a Palico chef? Yes please!

This 2018 ARPG by CapCom has taken on a bright and vibrant aesthetic. You play as a hunter of a new world questing into the untamed lands. Hunt monsters and bring their skins back to camp to craft ever greater weapons and armor all in the quest to protect Astera from an impending threat.

However you’re looking to experience it, this game supports playing online privately as well as with up to four-player co-op. There is an upbeat and slightly cartoonish feel to the art direction of Monster Hunter: World. If I had to assign one word to the feel of this game, it would be grand.

With a loved and adorable Palico by your side, you’ll experience the epic nature of the monsters found throughout the world's multiple and visually distinct regions. No matter if you're in the wilds battling or enjoying the creation of your next meal at the Canteen, the music is always whimsical and lively. Enjoy this look at a few of the monsters this game has to offer.

3. Hogwarts Legacy

I've got this. Have I? Yes, yes I do.

Avalanche Software developed this ARPG in 2023. Being part of the Wizarding World franchise, you play as a customizable fledgling wizard who is starting at Hogwarts. You’ll level up your wizard and complete mini-games to cast spells all while exploring the incredible grounds of Hogwarts.

I did have some issues with performance and long initial loading times as shaders had to cache. It did cross that line of going from the occasional annoyance to a frequent issue. Despite being above minimum spec, I experienced long pauses during visually intensive events such as casting spells.

The animation of spellcasting is gorgeous, but it is something you will do frequently. As you add effects from enemies and other elements, you do start to get that diminishing return on the beauty of the game.

The game is stunning and it hits the fanciful nature of a Harry Potter tale effectively. Therefore, despite some issues, Hogwarts Legacy is still an easy add to this list. To experience some of Hogwarts Legacy for yourself go here.

4. Middle Earth: Shadow of War

An ambush from above!

This next one is more akin to an action-adventure game with RPG elements. Immersed in a unique section of Tolkien fantasy, you play as Talion who is located outside the Black Gate of Mordor. You’ll complete quests in a compelling narrative with the likes of Gollum and meet the spirit of the creator of the one ring.

Shadow of War sets a high bar for wonderfully detailed characters, sprawling landscapes, and dynamic lighting and weather effects. My game ran smooth as butter. The soundtrack hits that wonderfully epic orchestral sound that blends seamlessly with periods of downtime that I would expect from a game within the same world as LOTR.

The backbone of combat for this one is fighting through hordes of low-level enemies to reach and eliminate the top-level enemies. While it can get a little tedious at times, finding and defeating those mini-bosses while out exploring was satisfying. This one is a must for LOTR fans, and check out the intensity of this trailer

5. Cyberpunk 2077

Wow! Such vibrant colors and an immersive setting. Who could this NP-- Oh, no!

Released in 2020 to controversy, Cyberpunk 2077 is an action-adventure roleplaying game. Originally, the game was buggy and had several problems for players.

However, it pleases me to say that CD Projekt Red has turned this venture into Night City around. Nowadays, due in part to bug fixes and the successful launch of the Phantom Liberty DLC, the response to this game is largely positive. While it took me a few years to swing back around after trying to play this in 2020 and experiencing an ever-present visual bug, I am glad to have played it.

The neon signs lighting dark streets and its overall colorful and, as the name implies, cyberpunk aesthetic bring the world into focus. Character models are impressive, with lifelike animations and intricate designs that bring the denizens of Night City to life. Dynamic lighting and weather effects enhance the immersion, creating a vibrant and atmospheric world that feels alive at every turn.

Work together!

We come to the MMORPG on this list. This sandbox-oriented game has a high fantasy setting and the plot revolves around the two warring factions present.

You’ll pick from one of the numerous classes and customize your character. From there, you will play in a world where you can fight monsters, fish, farm, trade, and engage in PVP activities such as siege events.

Developed by Pearl Abyss, the game contains meticulously designed character models, vibrant environments, and realistic lighting effects. From lush forests to arid deserts, locations offer an immersive world for players to explore. The game's graphics engine allows for seamless transitions between day and night cycles, as well as dynamic weather systems that enhance the visual experience.

7. Final Fantasy XVI

Look at that best pupper charge into combat on your behalf!

Square Enix came out with their sixteenth main installment of the Final Fantasy franchise in 2023. This somewhat darker take on the franchise was a welcome route and paid off for them. This ARPG comes with an impressive action-based combat system that you can use to explore the expansive world before you.

With cutscenes that could rival top-tier animation studios, it’s not difficult to see why this game is well-received. Play as Clive as you adventure with a top-notch party in this single-player adventure. From gorgeous landscapes to intricate character designs, every aspect of the game's graphics is painstakingly crafted, delivering an unparalleled experience that pushes boundaries.

8. Baldur’s Gate 3

It took me a few tries to really figure out how to deal with this particular enemy.

Now we come to the title that had me dying with anticipation as I waited to play it. Considering Baldur’s Gate II was one of the first games I ever played, my hype for BG3 was palpable by the time I got my hands on it. Oh, it was worth the wait.

In this turn-based RPG developed by Larian Studios in 2023, you play as either a customizable character or tav or as one of the premade characters available.  You can play this as a single-player adventure or with up to four friends in co-op. That comes complete with the full D&D experience of endless scheduling conflicts but is worth it if you can make it work.

There is one distinct beat drop so well executed that everyone who has played through it remembers it in detail. Giving Raphael’s boss battle one of the best musical moments I’ve ever experienced in a game, was a stroke of genius.

BG3 is my RPG of the decade for both its gameplay and artistic direction. Exploration is fun and there’s always something new around the next corner, the narrative is compelling, and the characters are memorable. For a taste of what is in store go here.

9. The Witcher 3

With a scene this epic, it's no wonder this title gets so much acclaim.

2015 saw this highlight of an ARPG from CD Projekt Red. Play as the famed Geralt of Rivia, as you try to save his adopted daughter, Ciri. You’ll complete engaging quests, fight the world's various monsters, and fill up your inventory with useful loot to craft various potions and other gear.

In this single-player adventure, you’ll explore a vivid world with its thematic music. As I type this out, Witcher III background music is my writing music of choice. The push and pull between relaxing and exciting is perfect.

The many characters have a depth to their design allowing for several visually stunning moments within the game. If you want to experience this for yourself, start here.

10. Modded Skyrim

Some gems are just worth dusting off every now and then.

But, how can a game that launched over a decade ago be on any top list in terms of graphics? Ah yes, Skyrim, the gift that keeps on giving.

Despite releasing in 2011, this ARPG keeps bringing us back with an impressive modding community that adds new wonder to the Elder Scrolls V. A recent gem is Eldergleam V2, a next-gen mod list from Capt. Panda.

Travel to Tamriel and experience being the Dragonborn, whether you’re replaying or trying out Skyrim for the first time, you’ll stare in wonder at how this mod list enhances the graphics of an old favorite. If you are experiencing this game for the first time, I envy you.

From updates to the dragon character models to the breathtaking landscapes, Capt. Panda’s care for the Elder Scrolls community is apparent. Follow this for a full video on what this mod list brings.

11. Kingdom Come Deliverance

Stay back!

One of the items that makes Kingdom Come: Deliverance a unique ARPG experience is Warhorse Studios’ attempt to create something that was period-accurate in terms of weapons, clothing, architecture, and combat techniques. That’s commendable. Released in 2018 and set in medieval Bohemia during a period of war, you will play as a soldier seeking vengeance for the death of his family.

With a focus on realism, the branching questlines will lead you to an exciting and praiseworthy narrative. Developing grand buildings and paying careful attention to detail on the clothing, it’s no wonder that this game came out with visually stunning graphics. For a peek at what’s in store, watch this.

12. Assassin’s Creed: Origins

That shield has some heavy lifting to do.

Similarly to some young girls, I had a phase where I ate up Egyptian mythology. So, when Ubisoft came out with this ARPG set in ancient Egypt, I was immediately interested. You’ll play as Bayek of Siwa as he and his wife, Aya, go on a quest for vengeance for their murdered son.

With many of the stealth action elements common to Assassin’s Creed stories, Origins implemented RPG elements to elevate the gameplay of the Assassin's Creed franchise. The naturally beautiful and sunny setting of Origins is well-represented in this vibrant and colorful world. Combat animations are fluid and harmonious bringing a seamless quality to the game.

While I had the option to change my steed over to a horse from a camel, why would I ever want to? Have a look at Assassin’s Creed: Origins for yourself.

13. Starfield

Give me the sci-fi beauty of space any day.

While Starfield launched to generally mixed reviews in 2023 from both critics and players alike, it’s a solid Bethesda ARPG. Traveling the stars and exploring unknown planets takes on a new meaning as you search the galaxy for mysterious artifacts. Set in Earth’s future, you’ll assume the role of a space miner thrust into a full-on space exploration quest.

As I had hoped from a futuristic sci-fi tale, the graphics are fantastic. The amazing ship designs and space environments are worth it. Starfield utilizes an orchestra and combines a classical theme into a compelling soundtrack.

For your viewing pleasure, here is a wonderful look at Starfield.

14. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Thwap! Goes the bat!

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the first of the Yakuza series to be a turn-based RPG. With its release in 2020, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio introduced a brand new protagonist to the series. You’ll play as Ichiban Kasuga who is on a quest to become a hero after a harsh betrayal by his boss several years prior.

The game's graphics showcase the bustling streets of Yokohama with immaculate detail, from neon-lit alleyways to city squares. Character animations are often zany and full of personality, conveying a wide range of emotions and interactions. Yakuza: Like a Dragon's graphics capture urban Japan excellently, providing you with an exciting backdrop for your crime-ridden and sometimes downright bizarre adventures.

Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself.

15. Dragon’s Dogma 2

A truly beautiful title!

Lastly, we come to our most recent release. This ARPG, developed and released by CapCom in early 2024, is a worthy successor to the first installment of the series.

Play as a customizable character who has gone forth to hunt a dragon who has chosen you as the “Arisen”. Explore through the open world to complete quests and gain new equipment while uncovering the secrets of the environment around you.

This game brings the thunder when it comes to impressive graphics and music. Animations including those when you climb onto a monster are fluid and beautiful.

Here’s a look at some of what Dragon’s Dogma 2 can bring.
