5. Killing Trilobites

Firstly, a method for our early-gamers that only need a small amount of oil to turn meat into jerky or craft some propellant. Trilobites are the small creatures you see skimming the bottom shallow waters or occasionally, near the beach. What makes them an easy source of oil? These invertebrates don’t even fight when they are attacked. The only thing they know how to do is run away, and they are not even good at it. Don’t expect to find great amounts of oil using this method. While you’ll get decent amounts of chitin, oil and pearls are not that common, but it’s still worth a try as the amount will surely be enough for a beginner.
How it works:
- Find some Trilobites at the beach/ at the bottom of lakes
- Kill them with a spear/ any tamed dinosaur
- Use a Metal Pick to harvest their bodies. If you want to go for a more advanced method, try using a Chainsaw (Scorched Earth) or a Diplocaulus
- Get a decent amount of chitin, oil, and pearls
4. Hesperornis Eggs

After two Hesperornis mate, their egg will be randomly dropped, waiting for you to gather it. These eggs can’t be made into Kibble. However, they can be eaten and even cooked in a Cooking Pot to quickly create Oil. The Hesperornis, despite its weird name, is actually a duck/ goose. Taming a pair of them can be a great idea for starting an Oil farm, as you can breed them and create a constant source of cookable eggs. These birds have an unusual form of passive taming. You need to gather some fish and feed them to the Hesperornis. The bigger the fish, the quicker the taming!
How it works:
- Find some ducks. Check the Habitat Maps available if you want to make your search easier
- Tame and breed them
- Take the eggs and cook them in a Cooking Pot to obtain 12 x Oil. Tip: If you take an egg away from its wild mother, the bird will become aggressive and attack you.
3. Snow Biome

There are 3 main environments where oil nodes spawn: Underwater caves, the ocean, and the Snow Biome. If you prefer an adventure to the Snow Biome, here is a piece of advice: dress accordingly, with fur armor to protect yourself from the cold. Despite the extreme cold, the Snow Biome isn’t harmless. It is home to a lot of dangerous creatures, such as Argentavis or Dire Wolf. Most of the black nodes will still be found underwater or in Underwater caves, so prepare for a short dive. If you want to level up your game, tame an Ankylosaurus and use it for mining the nodes. The job will be done in no time and your effort will be minimal.
How it works:
- Find the Snow Biome on your map
- Search for oil sources and farm them using a metal pick or preferably, an Ankylosaurus
- Mine the nodes and gather a great quantity of oil
2. Ocean floor/ River beds

Once you get a bit better and evolve past the Early-Game, it’s time to get yourself a decent water dino, good armor, and some courage because you will begin exploring the Underwater World of Ark. Oil nodes that are spawned on the ocean floor are easy to spot, as they are found in large clusters and they create a dark stream of oil that floats upwards. However, this world is home to terrifying creatures, and diving in the ocean empty-handed is the worst idea you ever had. To begin with, tame an Ichthyosaurus that will get you decent amounts of oil. When you feel prepared, the next best method is taming a powerful Megalodon to defend you or a scary Dunkleosteus.
How it works:
- Tame a water dinosaur that is either fast or powerful and can farm oil nodes efficiently
- Dive into the sea and find black nodes ready to be harvested
- Stay alert while gathering large amounts of oil for your stock
1. Dung Beetles
Check out this video for more details about this method:

The best method is, by far, creating your own Oil farm. This way, you will have a constant source of oil without going through all the trouble of finding and collecting it. Dung Beetles are harmless insects found in caves that can be easily tamed. They usually spawn near water sources, so you have to stay alert because other dangerous creatures might be living in the same area. Feed the Dung Beetles with their feces to tame them. The next step is transferring them to your base and creating an amazing Oil farm. Build a small pen for them to wander into and watch how they produce limitless amounts of oil and fertilizer.
How it works:
- Tame some Dung Beetles
- Let them wander in your base
- Gather the great quantity of Oil they passively produce
